Softball Stays Alive At CSAC Tournament with 8-4 Win Over Keystone

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Junior Jessica Hewitt and sophomore Meghan Hughes combined for five RBIs to lead the Centenary University softball team to an 8-4 over Keystone College in an elimination game at the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon.

No. 4 Centenary fell to No. 1 Wilson, 2-0 in its first game of the day before bouncing back for the elimination game win over the Giants.

Elimination Game (No. 4 Centenary defeated No. 3 Keystone, 8-4)
Keystone jumped out to an early lead in this one Shannon Lloyd had an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

The Cyclones took back the lead in the top of the third as they put five runs on the board. With one out and the bases loaded Hewitt reached on an error and two runs scored. Hughes followed with a double to left field that plated a pair of runs and gave the Cyclones a 4-1 advantage. Centenary pushed its lead to 5-1 as freshman Kayla Morales reached on an error and Hughes scored on the play.

Keystone answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of that frame. An RBI single from Brittney Vasquez and an RBI groundout from Lloyd made it a 5-3 game.

RBI singles from Hughes and freshman Madison Ketch pushed the Cyclones lead to 7-3 in the top of the fourth.

Keystone got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, which made it a 7-4 game.

A sacrifice fly from sophomore Courtney Deloughery in the top of the fifth gave the Cyclones an 8-4 advantage.

Sophomore Roxana Gonzalez  and Hewitt shut the Keystone offense down the rest of the way, allowing just three singles and a walk in the final three innings to secure the win.

Hewitt earned the win in the circle for the Cyclones as she gave up three runs on five hits in four innings of work. Gonzalez gave up just one unearned run in three innings of work. Alyssa Hughes took the loss for Keystone after giving up eight runs on 12 hits in the complete game performance.

Hughes had two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Cyclones while Hewitt added two RBIs and a run scored. Ketch contributed three hits and an RBI while Deloughery had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Lloyd finished with two hits and two RBIs for Keystone.

First Game (No. 1 Wilson Defeated No. 4 Centenary, 2-0)
A pair of RBIs from Taylor Durant proved to the difference in game one for Wilson against the Cyclones.

Durant connected on a two-out RBI double in the first to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 advantage.

Durant had an RBI groundout in the third that gave the home team a 2-0 advantage. That 2-0 advantage to proved to be the difference as Wilson claimed the win.

Sophomore Tessa Ferentinos had a pair of singles for the Cyclones as Deloughery had the other base knock for Centenary but neither player was able to cross the plate.

Megan Potter, the CSAC Pitcher of the Year, earned the win after giving up three hits and striking out four in the complete game effort. Hewitt took the loss as she gave up the two run, one of which was earned on five hits.

Durant led Wilson with two hits and two RBIs.

Ferentinos had two hits for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones resume CSAC Tournament play on Saturday, May 4 with another elimination game. Centenary's opponent will be the loser of the Cedar Crest/Wilson game. That contest began on Friday afternoon but was halted in the fourth inning with Cedar Crest winning 3-0. That game is scheduled to resume at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning which would mean the Centenary game would get underway at approximately 11 a.m.
