Softball Battles Keystone For Doubleheader Split in Regular Season Finale

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior Jessica Hewitt and sophomore Meghan Hughes each drove in four runs in game two to lead to Centenary University softball team to a doubleheader split with Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

The Giants grabbed a 10-2 win in game one before the Cyclones battled back for a 12-9 victory in game two.

Game One Recap (Keystone Won 10-2)
The Giants jumped out to an early advantage as Alyssa Hughes had a two run double to center in the top of the first.

Keystone added to its lead in the fourth on a RBI groundout from Sam Monetti and an RBI double from Paige Mokychic.

The Cyclones got on the board and made it a 4-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Madison Ketch ripped a triple to left that allowed Hughes to score and freshman Sandra Cosenzo followed with a sac fly to right that brought pinch runner Imani Lugo across the plate.

Six runs in the top of the seventh allowed Keystone to break open a close contest and claim the 10-2 win. Shannon Lloyd had a home run in the inning while Kassadi Woods added an RBI double.

Hughes picked up the win in the circle for Keystone as she tossed a complete game. She allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings. Cosenzo took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up two runs on three hits in the first inning.

Mokychic had four hits and two RBIs for Keystone while Hughes had two hits and two RBIs.

Hughes had a hit and a run scored for the Cyclones while Ketch recorded a hit and an RBI.

Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 12-9)
Keystone jumped out to an early lead in game two as Lloyd hit a two run home run in the first inning.

The Cyclones answered right back in the bottom half of the frame as RBI singles from Hewitt and Hughes gave the home team a 3-2 edge.

Keystone scored three in the top of the second and took a 5-3 advantage.

Centenary put four runs on the board in the bottom half of that frame and grabbed a 7-5 lead in the game. Hewitt plated two runs with her single through the left side of the infield.

Ketch led off the bottom of the third with a home run to left field. The freshman's second home run of the season extended the Centenary advantage to 8-5.

RBI singles from Lloyd and Hughes helped Keystone tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the fourth.

The Cyclones responded in their half of the inning with four runs and took a 12-8 lead in the game. Hughes had a two-run triple in the frame and later scored on a wild pitch.

Keystone got one run back in the fifth as Brittany Vasquez scored on an error but that was all as Centenary earned the 12-9 win.

Sophomore Roxana Gonzalez went the first 2.2 innings for the Cyclones and gave up five runs on six hits. Lauren Smith surrendered seven runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of action.

Hewitt went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Cyclones while Hughes had two hits, four RBIs and a run scored.

Lloyd went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Keystone.

The Cyclones will be back in action when the CSAC Championship gets underway on Friday, May 3 at top seeded Wilson. The fourth seeded Cyclones will take on the Phoenix at 12 p.m.
