Softball Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep of Notre Dame

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Eight players had multiple hits, including junior Justine Stefura who recorded her 100th career hit, as the Centenary University softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame of Maryland University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.

A four run first inning in game one helped the Cyclones post a 9-1 victory in five innings. Centenary scored seven runs in the second inning of game two and secured a 14-0 win also in five innings.

Game One Recap (Centenary won 9-1)
The Gators got on board first in game one as Sammy Kastner had an RBI single in the top of the first inning.

The Cyclones answered right back in the bottom half of that frame. With two outs in the inning, junior Jessica Hewitt stroked a single through the right side of the infield that scored Stefura and sophomore Tessa Ferentinos. Junior Juli Wright gave the home team a 3-1 lead with a triple to center field that scored Hewitt. Freshman Madison Ketch capped the first inning scoring with an RBI single down the right field line.

Centenary pushed its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third as sophomore Courtney Deloughery led off with a single and came around to score on Wright's RBI single.

The Cyclones tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning for an 8-1 advantage. Stefura lifted a sac fly to center that scored freshman Kayla Morales. Hewitt then reached on an error as Ferentinos and sophomore Meghan Hughes scored.

Centenary ended the game via the run-rule with two outs in the fifth as Deloughery singled home Hughes for the 9-1 win.

Hewitt earned the win in the circle for the Cyclones as she went five innings and gave up one run on four hits. She recorded a season-high six strikeouts in the contest. Jodie Bronushas took the loss for Notre Dame after giving up nine runs on 12 hits in five innings.

Wright was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Cyclones while Hughes had two hits and two runs scored.

Kastner had a hit and an RBI for the Gators.

Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 14-0)
The Cyclones struck first in game two as sacrifice flies from Deloughery and Stefura gave the home team a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.

Centenary sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second and scored seven runs for a 9-0 advantage. Ketch drove in two runs with a double while freshman Janaya Gaetan and Deloughery each contributed RBI singles in the frame.

Stefura reached the 100 hit plateau for her career with a two-run double in the third inning. The Cyclones led 12-0 after three innings of play.

Hughes and Deloughery had RBI singles in the fourth inning as Centenary took a 14-0 lead in the contest.

Freshman Sandra Cosenzo set the Gators down in the top of the fifth to secure the win.

Sophomore Roxana Gonzalez earned the win in the circle as she went four innings and allowed just five hits while striking out three. Cosenzo allowed one hit in her one inning of action. Isa Carunungan took the loss for Notre Dame after giving up 14 runs on 14 hits in four innings.

Hughes and Ketch each had three hits at the plate for the Cyclones. Hughes scored three runs and drove in another while Ketch had two runs scored and two RBIs. Stefura contributed two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Bronushas and Amethyst Stevens had two hits each for the Gators.

The Cyclones are back in action when they wrap up their home schedule by hosting Keystone on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m.
