ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Freshman
Madison Ketch hit her first career home run as the Centenary University softball team rallied for a doubleheader split at Cedar Crest College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons claimed a 5-4 win in eight innings in game one. The Cyclones rallied from a 4-0 deficit for an 8-6 victory in game two.
Game One Recap (Cedar Crest Won 5-4 in 8 innings)
The Cyclones jumped out to an early lead in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Junior
Justine Stefura had an RBI groundout that allowed sophomore
Meghan Hughes to score. Junior
Jessica Hewitt followed with an RBI single that plated sophomore
Tessa Ferentinos.
Cedar Crest got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth as
Delaney VanBuskirk hit a solo home run to center field.
The Cyclones pushed their lead to 3-1 in the fifth as sophomore
Courtney Deloughery stole second and on the play Hughes scored from third.
The Falcons tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of that frame as
Nicole Santaniello had a two run double.
Centenary went back on top, 4-3 with a run in the top of the seventh. Hewitt doubled to left field and Ferentinos scored on the play.
Cedar Crest tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh as Santaniello doubled home
Dallas Horning.
The home team scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth as the first two runners reached base.
Danielle Krispin then laid down a bunt and everyone was safe on the play as the Cyclones came home with the ball but couldn't get the tag down, which allowed the run to score.
Kendra Pekurny earned the win as she went 1.1 innings in relief and did not allow a hit. Sophomore
Samantha Gabriele took the loss after giving up two runs in 2.1 innings of relief work.
Santaniello had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Falcons in the contest.
Hewitt had two hits and two RBIs for Centenary while Hughes had two hits and two runs scored.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 8-6)
Game two saw the home team jump out to the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. The big hit in that inning came from Krispin who had a two run double down the left field line.
The Cyclones began their comeback in the fourth as Deloughery led off with a double down the left field line. Stefura followed with a bunt base hit, which put runners on first and third. Hewitt plated the first run for the Cyclones with a single to right field. Junior
Juli Wright grounded out but Stefura, who had moved to third on Hewitt's single, scored on the play, which made it a 4-2 game. Ketch then ripped a ball over the fence in left field and tied the game at 4-4.
Cedar Crest went back on top 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth as Horning had an RBI triple.
A two-out rally in the top of the fifth resulted in four runs and an 8-5 lead for the Cyclones. Stefura had an RBI double and Hewitt followed with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, freshman
Sandra Cosenzo drove in a pair of runs with a single through the right side.
Cedar Crest got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, which made it an 8-6 game, but the Cyclones got the final out of the inning on a strikeout from sophomore
Roxana Gonzalez.
Gonzalez and the Cyclones kept Cedar Crest off the board in the sixth and seventh innings and secured the 8-6 victory.
The win in the game goes to Cosenzo, who tossed two innings of relief work and gave up one run on three hits. Gonzalez picks up the save as she started the game and came back to work the final two innings and preserve the lead. The loss went to
Skyler Bilous who gave up seven runs in 4.2 innings.
Deloughery, Hewitt and Stefura all had two hits and two runs scored in game two for the Cyclones. Hewitt also added two RBIs to the Cyclones' cause. Ketch and Cosenzo each finished with a hit and two RBIs.
Krispin had two hits and two RBIs for Cedar Crest.
The Cyclones are back in action on Tuesday, April 23 when they host Notre Dame (Md.) for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
