Softball Battles for Doubleheader Sweep of Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – Timely hitting in game one and strong pitching in game two led the Centenary University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones earned a 7-0 win in game one and then battled for a 1-0 victory in eight innings in game two to complete the sweep.

Game One Recap (Centenary Won 7-0)
The Cyclones got on the board in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Courtney Deloughery doubled home sophomore Tessa Ferentinos, who reached on a single, with two outs. Deloughery then scampered home as junior Justine Stefura reached on an error.

Centenary maintained that 2-0 advantage until the top of the fifth. Junior Jessica Hewitt had a bases loaded single that scored Ferentinos, sophomore Meghan Hughes and junior Juli Wright.

The Cyclones capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Ferentinos' infield single scored freshman Kayla Morales before Stefura had a single that allowed freshman Janaya Gaetan to cross the plate.

Sophomore Samantha Gabriele pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings to secure the 7-0 victory for the Cyclones.

Hewitt picked up the win for the Cyclones as she surrendered just two hits in five innings of work before giving way to Gabriele for the final two innings. Gabriele did not give up a hit while striking out two. Krista Earl took the loss for Cairn after giving up seven runs on 10 hits.

Ferentinos was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Cyclones at the plate while Hewitt had two hits and three RBIs.

Haley Tinney had a hit and a walk for the Highlanders.

Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 1-0 in Eight Innings)
Game two belonged to the pitchers as sophomore Roxana Gonzalez and Meagan Maratita put zeros up on the scoreboard for the first seven innings.

Gonzalez scattered five hits and allowed just two runners to reach third base in 7.2 innings of work for the Cyclones.

Maratita kept the Cyclones off the board until the top of the eighth inning.

In that frame, freshman Madison Ketch led off the frame with a pinch-hit double. Gaetan reentered the game to run for Ketch and made it to third via a sac bunt from Hughes. Ferentinos reached on an error that allowed Gaetan to score the go-ahead run.

Cairn loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth but Gabriele got a pop-up to end the game.

Gonzalez picked up the win for the Cyclones, her first of the year. Gabriele earned her first save with a third of an inning pitched. Maratita took the loss for Cairn.

Ferentinos and Deloughery each had two hits to lead the Cyclones.

Tori Knox led Cairn with a pair of base knocks.

The Cyclones are back in action on Monday, April 15 when they host Marywood for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
