MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomores
Tessa Ferentinos and
Meghan Hughes each recorded three hits as the Centenary University softball team opened its 2019 campaign with a pair of games at the Fast Pitch Spring Dreams Classic in South Carolina.
Guilford College used a big sixth inning to claim a 10-5 win over the Cyclones in the season opener. In the nightcap, Centenary battled back to force extra innings but ultimately fell to Waynesburg, 3-2.

Guilford jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as
Sarah Aukamp had a two-run double to right field.
The Cyclones tied things up the in top of the second as freshman
Kayla Morales drove in sophomore
Courtney Deloughery with a single to right field. Later in the frame, Ferentinos got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which forced in freshman
Madison Ketch.
Guilford took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Aukamp drove in another run for Quakers with a single through the right side.
Once again, the Cyclones battled back and tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Freshman
Janaya Gaetan doubled to score Ketch, who had reached on an error. Junior
Justine Stefura then delivered a single, which scored Gaetan. Hughes drove a double into left center to score Stefura with two outs.
A five-run bottom of the sixth inning gave Guilford a 10-5 lead in the contest. The big blow in that inning came off the bat of
Savannah Yale, who hit a grand slam to left field.
Deloughery reached base in the top of the seventh for Centenary but she was unable to come around and Guilford claimed the win.
Katie McNeil earned the win in the circle for Guilford. She tossed 3.1 innings of one-hit relief work for the Quakers. Sophomore
Samantha Gabriele took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of action.
Aukamp led Guilford with three hits and three RBIs in the game.
Stefura had a hit, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones while Ketch scored twice.
Waynesburg Recap
The Waynesburg contest was a close battle as neither team was able to break through until the fourth inning.
Alex Lawrence put the Yellow Jackets on the board in the fourth with a home run. Waynesburg extended its lead to 2-0 as
Rachel Skon had an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth as Hughes singled to center field and freshman
Sandra Cosenzo scored on the play.
The Cyclones tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth as Gaetan had a one-out single that scored Deloughery.
Waynesburg scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eight as Lawrence doubled to left field and Skon scored on the play.
Emma Kubalak earned the win for Waynesburg as she gave up two runs on nine hits in the complete game effort. Junior
Jessica Hewitt suffered the loss in the circle as she gave up three runs on eight hits also in a complete game effort.
Lawrence led Waynesburg with two hits and two RBIs.

Juli Wright each had two this for the Cyclones.
Centenary is back in action on Monday, March 11 as it continues its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach. The Cyclones will take on Greenville at 1:30 p.m. and SUNY Poly at 3:30 p.m.
