MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sophomore
Tessa Ferentinos had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Centenary University softball team in a doubleheader at Montclair State on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Hawks jumped out to a big first inning lead and claimed a 9-3 win in game one. The Cyclones and Montclair State battled early in game two before the Red Hawks earned a 9-1 win.
Game One Recap (Montclair State Won 9-3)
Montclair State used a seven run first inning to open up a big lead in game one. The inning was highlighted by two-run double from
Samantha DiClementi and RBI doubles from
Valentina Cucci and
Amber Powers.
The Red Hawks added single runs in the second and fourth innings and took a 9-0 lead in the game.
The Cyclones got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman
Janaya Gaetan reached via an error and sophomore
Meghan Hughes doubled to left to put two runners on. Ferentinos then ripped a double to left center to score both runners. After moving to third on a passed ball, Ferentinos crossed the plate on sophomore
Courtney Deloughery's sac fly.
Centenary had a runner on in the sixth and one in the seventh but was unable to bring either one around and Montclair State claimed the 9-3 victory.
Cucci earned the win in the circle for Montclair State as she threw four innings of scoreless action.
Alyssa Bernardo pitched the final three innings for the Red Hawks and allowed three runs on three hits. Sophomore
Samantha Gabriele took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up seven runs on six hits. Sophomore
Roxana Gonzalez pitched the final 5.1 innings for the Cyclones and gave up two runs on five hits.
Powers led Montclair State with three hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Ferentinos had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones. Hughes and Gaetan each posted a hit and a run scored.
Game Two Recap (Montclair State Won 9-1)
Montclair State struck first in game two as Cucci lifted a sac fly to left for the first run.
The Red Hawks took a 2-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third.
Centenary made it a one-run game, 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Deloughery drew a one-out walk and came around to score on junior
Jessica Hewitt's RBI single.
Montclair State added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cucci and
Blake Saperstein had RBI doubles that made it a 5-1 game.
The Red Hawks closed out the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and earned a 9-1 victory.
Kiara Ruiz earned the win for Montclair State after giving up one run on one hit in six innings of action. Hewitt took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Powers had two hits and two runs scored for Montclair State while Cucci had a hit and three RBIs.
Hewitt had a hit and an RBI while Deloughery scored the run.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday, March 30 when they host Wilson in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at 1 p.m.
