CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Junior
Jessica Hewitt allowed just two runs in a combined 10 innings of work to lead the Centenary University softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Clarks Summit University to open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
The Cyclones took game one by an 11-1 score and completed sweep with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game One Recap (Centenary Won 11-1)
Clarks Summit struck first in game one with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Defenders got their run via an
Allison Glennon RBI single.
The Cyclones responded in a big way with six runs in the top of the second inning. Centenary scored five of its six runs with two-outs in the frame. Freshman
Janaya Gaetan and sophomore
Tessa Ferentinos each had RBI singles in the inning while sophomore
Courtney Deloughery delivered an RBI double.
Centenary made it a 7-1 game in the top of the third as junior
Justine Stefura reached via an error and eventually came around to score as sophomore
Meghan Hughes reached via an error.
In the fourth inning, Hewitt singled to lead off the frame and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Centenary capped the scoring with three runs in the top of the fifth which made it an 11-1 game. Junior
Imani Lugo and Hughes each reached via a walk and scored on Deloughery's RBI single. Deloughery scampered home as junior
Juli Wright reached on an error.
Hewitt picked up her second straight win for the Cyclones with five innings of one-run ball. The junior gave up four hits and struck out a pair of batters.
Molly Ayala took the loss for Clarks Summit after giving 11 runs on nine hits in five innings.
Deloughery led Centenary at the dish as she went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hughes had a hit and two runs scored while Ferentinos finished with a hit and two RBIs.
Glennon had a hit and an RBI for the Defenders.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 7-1)
Centenary struck first in game two as Ferentinos used an RBI groundout to plate Hughes with the game's first run.
The Cyclones made it a 4-0 game with three runs in the top of the third inning. Deloughery recorded an RBI single and came around to score on Wright's triple to right center. Hewitt then plated Wright with an infield single.
Centenary pushed its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth as Hughes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Freshman
Sandra Cosenzo scored on the play as she had led off the inning with a double.
Clarks Summit got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Glennon had an RBI groundout.
Centenary tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth and made it a 7-1 game. Hughes ripped an RBI triple to right center as Gaetan scored on the base knock. Hughes then crossed the plate on Ferentinos' RBI groundout.
Hewitt picked up her second win of the day and third straight with five innings of work. She allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. Sophomore
Samantha Gabriele tossed two innings of one hit relief work to close out the action for the Cyclones. Glennon took the loss for Clarks Summit after giving up seven runs on 13 hits.
Hughes was 3-for-3 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Cyclones. Gaetan contributed two hits and a run scored while Deloughery, Wright and Hewitt each had two hits and an RBI.
Alexa Wagner led Clarks Summit with two hits.
The Cyclones wrap up a busy stretch as they travel to Montclair State for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
