HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A huge first half allowed the Centenary University women's basketball to close out the regular season with a 62-34 win over Bryn Athyn on Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Prior to the start of the game, the Cyclones took a moment to honor senior
Kayla Rowan, who was appearing in her final home game. The guard, who earned her second career start, responded with two points, a career-high nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Cyclones opened the first quarter with the hot hand as the home team scored the first 12 points of the game. Freshmen
Carly Tarnowski,
Victoria Jacobs and
Jessica McKenzie each scored four points in the run that was capped by a McKenzie lay-up at 4:44.
Bryn Athyn briefly halted the Centenary run with an
Allie Warren lay-up at 3:54.
Centenary scored the final six points of the quarter and took an 18-2 lead after 10 minutes of play. McKenzie added four more during that run.
The Cyclones scored six of the first eight points in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 24-4 with 7:37 to go until the half.
The two teams traded baskets before the Cyclones closed the second quarter on a 16-2 run and took a 40-10 lead at the half. Freshman
Taylor Bossert scored 10 points during that run.
The Cyclones and Lions went back-and-forth to as McKenzie's lay-up at 5:43 of the third quarter put the home team up 43-14.
Back-to-back buckets from Tarnowski and sophomore
Danika Brandt gave the Cyclones a 47-16 lead with 2:30 to go in the period. It was Centenary's largest lead of the game.
Bryn Athyn scored seven of the final eight points in the third quarter but the Cyclones led 48-23 with 10 minutes to play.
Freshman
Caitlyn Reyes scored four of the first seven points in the fourth quarter as Centenary held a 52-26 advantage with eight minutes to go in the game.
An 8-0 run by the home team put the Cyclones on top, 60-29 with 3:28 showing on the clock. Bossert had a pair of buckets during that stretch.
The two teams continued to battle as a lay-up from Rowan sealed the 62-34 win for the Cyclones.
Centenary shot 44.4 percent from the field in the game and was 4-for-6 from the foul line. Bryn Athyn finished the game shooting 21.5 percent from the floor and was 5-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Lions held a 46-45 edge in the rebounding battle.
McKenzie led the Cyclones with 18 points and nine rebounds while Bossert came off the bench to contribute 14 points while Jacobs finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Reyes had six points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Janalene Phillips led Bryn Athyn with 10 points while
Clayshonia Cogmon had 20 rebounds.
The Cyclones will be back in action when they travel to Cairn on Monday, Feb. 18 for the first round of the CSAC Tournament. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
