Men's Basketball Earns 91-74 Win over Clarks Summit On Senior Day

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A big first half lifted the Centenary University men's basketball team to a 91-74 win over Clarks Summit University in the regular season Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) finale on Saturday.

Prior to the start of the game, the Cyclones celebrated Senior Day by recognizing seniors Tom Weiler, Stewart Lester and Greg Robinson, who were appearing in their final home game.

The Cyclones opened the game on a 15-5 run as Weiler drained his second three-pointer of the day at the 14:39 mark. Weiler struck for eight points during that early run for the Cyclones.

Clarks Summit responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 point in the game and cut the Centenary lead to two, 17-15 with 12:54 to go in the period.

The two teams traded points before an 11-0 run by the Cyclones pushed the home team's advantage to 15, 34-19 with 8:44 showing on the clock. Sophomore Michael Young struck for seven points during that key stretch.

Clarks Summit briefly halted the Centenary run with a basket at 6:40. However, the Cyclones scored 14 of the final 19 points in the half and took a 48-26 lead at the half. Freshman Billy Veras had four points during that scoring spurt.

The two teams traded baskets early in the second half as a three-pointer from sophomore Chris LaBelle at 13:40 gave the Cyclones a 55-34 lead.

Clarks Summit used a 16-7 run to pull to within 12, 62-50 with 9:53 to go in the game. Isaiah Taylor scored five points during that stretch for the Defenders.

The two teams battled on each end of the court as a pair of free throws from Lester at 5:36 put the Cyclones ahead 75-57.

The Cyclones and Defenders continued to trade points as pair of free throws from Weiler extended the home team's lead to 83-62 with 3:25 to go in the game.

Centenary got a late three-pointer from junior Brandon Yu as the Cyclones claimed the 91-74 win.

Centenary shot 50 percent from the field in the game and knocked down 11 three-pointers. The Cyclones were also aided by going 26-for-35 from the foul line in the contest. Clarks Summit posted a 50 percent field goal percentage and was 18-for-23 from the charity stripe. The Defenders held a 33-29 edge in the rebounding battle.

Centenary had five players score in double figures and Weiler, who had 19 points, led that group and two steals. LaBelle finished with 18 points and five rebounds while Veras posted 17 points and five rebounds. Also hitting double digits was Young, who had 14 points and freshman Divine Anderson, who contributed 10 points.

Marcus Dixon led Clarks Summit with 17 points.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 when they travel to top seeded Cairn for the CSAC semifinals at 7 p.m.
