Weiler Leads Cyclones in CSAC Semifinal Loss to Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – Senior Tom Weiler posted his first career double-double but a strong second half lifted No. 1 Cairn to an 82-71 win over the fourth seeded Centenary University men's basketball team in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinals on Tuesday night.

Weiler was one of five Cyclones to score in double figures in the contest.

The Cyclones jumped out to an early 6-3 lead at CSAC Rookie of the Year Billy Veras knocked down a three-pointer at 17:15.

Five straight points, including three from freshman Divine Anderson extended the Centenary lead to 14-8 with 14:37 showing on the clock.

An 8-0 run by the visitors gave Centenary a 22-11 advantage with 11:03 to go until the half. Sophomore Michael Young connected on a three-pointer during that stretch.

Cairn cut the Centenary lead to five, 24-19 with 9:54 remaining in the period.

The Cyclones responded with a 13-3 run and took a 37-22 advantage with 5:01 to go until the break. Young made a pair of shots from behind the arc during that scoring spurt for the Cyclones.

A lay-up from Weiler made it a 42-28 game with 1:42 showing on the clock.

The two teams traded baskets over the final minute and a half as Cairn got a late three-pointer from Jordan Koczman as the final bucket of the half. Centenary took a 45-35 lead at the break despite that late triple.

Cairn carried the momentum of that late three into the second half as the Highlanders scored the first 15 points of the second stanza and turned a 10-point deficit into a 50-45 with 11:36 to go in the game.

A lay-up from Veras got the Cyclones on the board for the second half at 11:18.

Cairn continued to shoot the ball well as the home team extended its lead to 58-47 with 9:16 showing on the clock.

Sophomore Chris LaBelle scored five straight points and cut the Cairn lead to six, 61-55 with 7:36 to play in the game.

The two teams continued to battle and trade points as a three-pointer from Young at 3:51 cut the Cyclone deficit to four, 69-65.

That was as close as the Cyclones would get as Cairn claimed the 82-71 win and advanced to the CSAC Championship game.
