Late Run Lifts Marywood Over Men's Basketball

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Marywood University scored 16 of the final 29 points to secure a 92-88 come from behind win over the Centenary University men's basketball team on Tuesday night in nonconference action.

The Cyclones started the game strong and opened up a 17-8 lead with 13:22 to play in the period. Sophomore Tyler White drained a pair of three-pointers in that run while junior Chris LaBelle added five points.

A steal and a bucket from White at 9:50 pushed the Centenary lead to 27-17, the Cyclones' largest advantage of the half.

The two teams continued to battle as Marywood used an 11-0 run to take a 32-29 lead 5:11 showing on the clock. Donovan Catchings struck for four points during that stretch.

Centenary responded with a 14-4 run of its own and took a 43-36 lead with 2:16 to go until the half. Sophomore Divine Anderson and LaBelle each contributed six points during that stretch.

The two teams traded points over the final two minutes of the period as Centenary took a 47-41 lead at the break. LaBelle led all players with 13 points and four assists during the first 20 minutes of action.

Centenary scored 11 of the first 17 points in the second half and took a 58-47 lead with 15:01 to play. Sophomore Billy Veras scored six points during that stretch while LaBelle converted a traditional three-point play.

The two teams traded points on both ends of the floor. The Pacers cut the Centenary lead to two but three-point plays from freshman Owen Roberts III and graduate student Tom Weiler pushed the home team's advantage back to eight, 67-59 with 12:07 showing on the clock.

The Cyclones and Pacers continued to go back-and-forth as a pair of free throws from LaBelle gave Centenary a 73-68 lead with 7:14 to go.

A Tom DeFilippo three-pointer at 5:20, which jump started the run that helped Marywood secure the win.

The Pacers led by as many as six during that run.

The Cyclones cut the Marywood lead to one, 89-88 as freshman Sammy Growalt made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds to play.

DeFilippo made one of two from the foul line with 14 seconds to go which pushed the visitors' lead to three, 91-88 with 14 seconds showing on the clock.

The Cyclones had one last chance with four seconds to play but the three-point attempt was blocked and Marywood added one more free throw for the 92-88 win.

Marywood shot 45.6 percent from the field and was 25-for-35 from the charity stripe. Centenary posted a 45.2 field goal percentage and was 14-for-18 from the foul line. Marywood won the rebounding battle, 51-36.

LaBelle paced the Cyclones with 25 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Veras chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks while White added 10 points. Weiler finished with a team-high nine rebounds and seven points.

Jack DeGroot led Marywood with 27 points and eight rebounds.

The Cyclones are back in action on Thursday, Nov. 21 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark for a 7 p.m. game.
