Freshmen Lead Women's Basketball to 65-54 Win At Clarks Summit

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – A trio of freshmen scored in double figures to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to its second straight win, this time by a 62-54 margin at Clarks Summit University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

The two teams went back-and-forth early as a jumper from Meghan Pollock at 4:40 gave the Lady Defenders a 12-9 advantage.

Centenary responded with a 10-1 run to close out the first quarter. Sophomore Danika Brandt dropped in a pair of three-pointers during that scoring spurt that gave the Cyclones a 19-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.

After surrendering a three-pointer to open the second quarter, the Cyclones responded with five straight points and took a 24-16 lead with 7:14 to go until the half. Freshman Taylor Bossert drained a three-pointer during the run.

The two teams continued to battle as a jumper from freshman Caitlyn Reyes gave the Cyclones a 27-20 advantage with 3:23 showing on the clock.

Jumpers from Bossert and freshman Jessica McKenzie sent the Cyclones into the half with a 31-22 lead on the scoreboard.

Freshman Carly Tarnowski scored the first eight points of the third quarter for the Cyclones and Centenary held a 39-30 lead with 4:49 to go in the period.

A jumper from freshman Victoria Jacobs allowed Centenary to take a 43-33 advantage with 3:22 showing on the clock.

McKenzie tallied the final six points of the period for the visitors as the Cyclones took a 49-38 lead after three periods of play.

Centenary opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run and took a 54-38 lead with 8:23.

The two teams continued to battle as senior Kayla Rowan's jumper at 7:02 gave the visitors a 58-44 advantage.

Centenary eventually claimed the 65-54 win for its second straight victory.

Centenary shot a season-best 48.1 percent from the floor in the contest and connected on five three-pointers. The Cyclones were 10-for-14 from the foul line in the game. Clarks Summit shot 41.3 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers. The Lady Defenders were 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Centenary held a 29-14 advantage in the rebounding battle.

It was a balanced attack for the Cyclones as eight of the nine players who appeared in the game scored at least two points and eight Cyclones grabbed at least two rebounds. McKenzie led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds while Bossert contributed 13 points and two assists. Tarnowski came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

Natalie Tuffy led Clarks Summit with 25 points.

Centenary is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 10 as the Cyclones return home for the first time in over a month to host Rosemont at 6 p.m.
