Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball to 62-49 Win Over Wilson

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four starters scored in double figures to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 62-49 win over Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Thursday night.

The Cyclones have won two straight as freshman Taylor Bossert poured in a season-high 19 points in the game.

The two teams traded baskets early on as Lindsey Purvis' lay-up at 4:20 gave Wilson a 10-7 lead in the game.

Centenary scored the final nine points of the first quarter and took a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes of play. Freshman Jessica McKenzie scored four points during that run while fellow freshman Victoria Jacobs banked in a three-pointer just before the buzzer.

Wilson scored the first eight points of the second quarter and took an 18-16 edge with 6:24 to go until the half. Kai Wyatt had a pair of three-pointers during that run.

The two teams traded baskets as a pair of free throws from freshman Carly Tarnowski tied the game at 20-20 with 3:23 showing on the clock.

L'Shana Cobey hit a free throw with 36 seconds to go in the period and tied the game at 23-23.

Freshman Meghan Barone sunk a three-pointer with 12 seconds to go until the half and sent the home team into the break with a 26-23 edge.

Centenary scored nine of the first 14 points in the third quarter and extended its lead to seven, 35-28 with 6:53 to go in the period. Jacobs contributed four points during that stretch.

The two teams traded points over the next several minutes as a jumper from Bossert gave the Cyclones a 41-35 advantage with 3:15 showing on the clock.

A late lay-up from Tarnowski gave the Cyclones a 45-38 lead after three quarters of play.

A 6-2 run to start the fourth quarter gave Centenary a 51-40 lead with 5:42 to go in the game. Jacobs connected on a three-pointer during that scoring spurt.

A pair of free throws from McKenzie put the home team ahead 53-43 with 3:15 showing on the clock.

Bossert was a stellar 9-for-10 from the foul line over the final 1:12, which allowed the Cyclones to close out a 62-49 win.

Centenary finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field and was added by going 19-for-21 from the foul line in the game. Wilson posted a field goal percentage of 37 percent but was just 4-for-10 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle, 38-31.

In addition to her 19 points, Bossert contributed five assists with no turnovers and five rebounds for the Cyclones. McKenzie posted her team-leading eighth double-double of the year as she finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She didn't miss an opportunity from the foul line as she was 7-for-7 from the stripe.  McKenzie also added three blocks, two assists and two steals.

Jacobs contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for the Cyclones while Tarnowski added 11 points.

Wyatt led Wilson with 16 points.

The Cyclones wrap up a busy week as they visit Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
