Huge Fourth Quarter Gives Cyclones Comeback Win Over New Rochelle

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Trailing by 15 to start the fourth quarter, the Centenary University women's basketball exploded for a huge fourth quarter and a 63-62 comeback win over the College of New Rochelle on Tuesday night.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Cyclones as junior Dayna Wich and freshman Jessica McKenzie each recorded double-double performances.

Centenary jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter as freshman Victoria Jacobs hit a lay-up at 5:41. Wich accounted for the other six points in the stretch for the Cyclones.

New Rochelle responded by scoring the final eight points of the stanza and took a 10-8 lead after 10 minutes of game action.

Those eight points were part of a 14-0 run by the Blue Angels that bridged the first and second quarters and gave the visitors a 16-8 lead with 7:54 to go until the half. DarNeisha Brice and Ashley Martin each scored four points during that stretch.

The two teams battled back-and-forth as freshman Taylor Bossert nailed a three-pointer at 5:06 which cut the Centenary deficit to four, 21-17.

New Rochelle closed the second quarter on an 11-5 run and took a 32-22 at the half. Julee Martinez accounted for five points during that scoring spurt while Melissa Perez hit a pair of three-pointers.

The Blue Angels opened the third quarter on a 9-1 run and took a 41-23 advantage with 7:21 to play in the period. Brice scored five points during that run.

A lay-up from Wich at 3:59 cut the Centenary deficit to 43-30.

The two teams traded points over the final three minutes of quarter as a pair of free throws with 43 seconds showing on the clock from Jacobs made it a 50-35 game with 10 minutes to play.

Centenary scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter and cut the New Rochelle to one, 50-49 with 4:29 to go in the game. Freshman Carly Tarnowski poured in eight points during that scoring spurt while Bossert accounted for four points.

The two teams battled on each end of the court as a three-pointer from Brice at 1:36 put New Rochelle ahead 57-54.

After a Tarnowksi jumper, Bossert scored the next five points and put Centenary ahead 61-57 with 11 seconds to play.

A three-pointer from Martinez cut the Centenary lead to one, 61-60 with seven seconds to play.

Jacobs sunk a pair of foul shots to extend the home team's lead 63-60.

New Rochelle got a bucket from Martin as time expired but she was just inside the three-point arc and the Cyclones earned the 63-62 comeback win.

Centenary finished the game shooting 34.8 percent from the field and was 11-for-14 from the foul line. New Rochelle posted a 38.2 field goal percentage for the game and went 4-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Blue Angels held a 49-43 edge in the rebounding battle.

Wich posted her first career double-double with a career-high 14 points and 12 rebounds while also adding three assists. McKenzie recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the year with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Bossert finished with a team-high 15 points and seven assists while Jacobs and Tarnowski each had 10 points.

Brice led New Rochelle with 19 points while Martin added a game-high 17 rebounds and six points.

The Cyclones are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 24 when they host Wilson at 6 p.m.
