Cyclones Extend Win Streak With 83-64 Win At Hunter

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Five players scored in double figures to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to an 83-64 victory at Hunter College on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Emmanuel Doh scored a team-high 21 points as the Cyclones recorded their fourth straight win. It's the first four game win streak for Centenary since the 2016-17 season.

Centenary jumped out to an early 10-5 lead as freshman Billy Veras connected on a lay-up at 15:30.

Hunter scored 13 of the next 17 points in the game and took an 18-16 lead with 10:33 showing on the clock. Abraham Rosow connected on three three-pointers during that stretch.

Centenary used a 9-3 run of its own to take a 25-21 advantage with 8:06 to go until the half. Junior Pablo Vasquez accounted for six of those points for the Cyclones.

The two teams battled over the next several minutes as a basket from Hunter's Gio Gabbidon at 1:02 tied the game at 34-34.

Veras made 1-of-2 from the foul line with two seconds to go in the stanza which allowed Centenary to take a 35-34 edge at the half.

The Cyclones opened the second half with the hot hand and scored the first 11 points. That pushed the Centenary advantage to 46-34 with 15:14 to go in the game. Senior Tom Weiler knocked down a pair of three-pointers during that run.

After Hunter made 1-of-2 from the foul line, the Cyclones used back-to-back buckets from freshman Divine Anderson and Doh to extend their lead to 52-35 with 13:25 showing on the clock.

Hunter used a 12-4 run to cut the Centenary lead to nine, 56-47 with 9:08 to go in the game. George Keener scored 10 of the Hawks' 12 points during that stretch.

The two teams traded baskets as Weiler's third triple of the half gave the Cyclones a 64-51 lead with 6:42 remaining in the stanza.

A three-point play from Keener at 4:27 pulled the home team within 11, 69-58.

Centenary closed the game on a 14-6 run to secure the 83-64 victory. Veras had five points during that run while Anderson added four and junior Brandon Yu connected on a three-pointer.

For the second time during the current win streak, the Cyclones posted a field goal percentage of 50 percent or better. After shooting 54.5 percent in the second half, the Cyclones finished the game shooting 50 percent. Centenary also made 10-of-17 chances from the foul line. Hunter shot 43.1 percent from the field and made 7-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle 40-37.

Doh paced the Cyclones as he finished with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. It was his second game this season with 20 or more points scored. Veras contributed his second straight double-double and fourth of the season. The freshman forward finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Anderson and Weiler each posted 13 points in the game. Anderson added seven rebounds and a season-best eight assists while Weiler dished out five assists.

Vasquez was the fifth Cyclone in double figures as he posted 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench.

Keener led Hunter with 25 points and nine rebounds.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 24 when they host Wilson at 8 p.m.
