GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Senior
Jared Miele's first goal of the season lifted the Centenary University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon.
The Cyclones posted their second shutout in the last three games and improved to 3-6 on the year with the win over their former conference foe.
Miele wasted little time in getting the Cyclones on the board as his goal came just 1:08 into the contest.
The Centenary defense was on lock down early as it took Gwynedd Mercy until there was 18:07 left in the period to register a shot.
The Cyclones carried that 1-0 lead into the half as the visitors held a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes of the contest. Senior
Devon Warne saved the only shot he faced in the first stanza.
Centenary continued to pepper the Griffins defense with shots in the second half. The Cyclones registered 13 shots as senior
Josh Weiss and freshmen
Jahn Lopez,
Stephen Zuluaga and
Shane Wilson all had multiple shots. However, the Cyclones were unable to tally another goal.
The Centenary defense continued to hold strong as it limited Gwynedd Mercy to just two shots, one of which was on goal in the second half.
Warne made two saves to earn the win in goal. The shutout was Warne's third of the season and 14th of his career.
Kace Peters made two saves for Gwynedd Mercy before giving way to
Joe Duffy, who made six saves in relief work for the Griffins.
Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when it hosts Scranton at 4 p.m.
