Weiss and Warne Power Men's Soccer to First Ever Win Over Scranton

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior Josh Weiss scored in the 11th minute to lift the Centenary University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Scranton on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference action.

It was the first win in six tries for the Cyclones over the Royals.

Scranton held a 17-4 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes but the Cyclones got the one that counted.

In the 11th minute, freshman Joseph Ertl played a ball into the offensive end that Weiss was able to collect and knock home. For the senior it was his third goal of the season while Ertl registered his first collegiate point with the helper.

Senior Devon Warne made 10 first half saves to help the Cyclones maintain their lead at the break. Senior Sebastian Hernandez made a huge play for the defense as Scranton looked to have a break away in the closing minute but Hernandez got back and was able to slide and knock the ball away.

Scranton continued to pressure the Cyclone defense as the Royals rattled off 14 second half shots. However, Warne and the defense stood tall as the senior goalkeeper stopped all four shots that were on goal and the defenders blocked several.

Centenary claimed the 1-0 victory for its second straight shutout win and its third shutout in the last four games.

Warne had a career-high 14 saves in the contest to record his fourth shutout of the season and 15th of his career. Blake Hammert earned the start for Scranton and made one save in the first half. Jake Hodlofski made one save in the second half in relief action.

Scranton finished the game with a 31-8 advantage in shots and a 19-1 edge in corner kicks.

Centenary will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 as the Cyclones host Rosemont at 3 p.m.
