MADISON, N.J. – Senior
Devon Warne made six saves as the Centenary University men's soccer team fell to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the opening match of the Drew Fall Festival on Friday afternoon.
TCNJ scored one goal in the upcoming stanza and added two more in the final 45 minutes for the 3-0 victory.
"Although we didn't get the result we wanted, many of the freshmen stepped up in a big way and showed they can play at this level," said head coach
Josh Spivack. "We also created some good chances but couldn't find the final touch to put the ball in the back of the net."
Warne made all six of his saves for the Cyclones in the first half of the game while freshman
Besnik Hadzovic got off a pair of shots for Centenary.
Hadzovic was one of eight freshmen who saw time in the season opener for Spivack and the Cyclones. Freshmen
Shane Wilson,
Sebastian Montoya and
Jahn Lopez all earned the start in their first collegiate experience.
Ryan Vazquez scored the first two goals of the game, one in each half, to lead the Lions to the victory.
TCNJ outshot the Cyclones 13-4 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
It's a quick turnaround for the Cyclones as they return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 1 as they take on No. 12 Drew in the final contest of the Drew Fall Festival.
