MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Senior
Carolyn Clites had three hits to lead the Centenary University softball team in doubleheader action at Montclair State on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Hawks edged the Cyclones 3-0 in game one before capturing a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.
Game One Recap (Montclair State Won 3-0)
Montclair State got on the board in the bottom of the first as
Elena Radesich lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Red Hawks added to their lead with a run in the fourth as
Alana Luna had a double to center field that drove in a run.
Montclair State made it a 3-0 game with a run in the fifth on
Amber Powers' infield single.
Centenary's best chance in the game came in the second as seniors
Raychel Piserchia and
Sammie Darling had back-to-back singles but the Red Hawks were able to get the final out.
Courtney Politz earned the win in the circle as she gave up just four hits in seven innings of work. Darling took the loss after giving up two runs in 3.1 innings of action. Sophomore
Jessica Hewitt gave up the third run on a hit in 2.2 innings of work.
Kaylee Powers led Montclair State with two hits and a run scored while
Amber Powers finished with a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
Clites, Piserchia, Darling and freshman
Courtney Deloughery all finished with a hit for the Cyclones. Clites' base knock was a double in the first inning.
Game Two Recap (Montclair State Won 10-2)
In game two, it was the Cyclones getting on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the first. With two outs, Clites ripped her second double of the day and came around to score on Hewitt's single. She then crossed the plate on sophomore
Justine Stefura's double to center field.
Montclair State answered with four runs in the bottom half of that frame. The big hit of the inning came from
Valentina Cucci who had a three run home run to left field.
The Red Hawks extended their lead to 7-2 as
Victoria Gehring had a two run single up the middle.
Montclair State led 9-2 after three innings.
An RBI double from Gehring in the bottom of the fifth made the final score 10-2 in favor of the home team.
Nicole Majewski earned the win for the Red Hawks after giving up two runs on five hits in three innings of work. Darling took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in the first inning.
Gehring led Montclair State at the plate as she was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Radesich had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
Clites had two hits and a run scored for the Cyclones while Hewitt had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
The Cyclones are back in action tomorrow, April 19 when they host Cairn at 3 p.m. The Cyclones will be supporting the Amazing Grace Foundation, which provides care packages for cancer patients at the game at the scorer's table. Fans, who wish to make a donation but can't attend tomorrow's game
