HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Kyle Mott posted his second straight hat trick to lead the Centenary University men's lacrosse team in a 14-5 loss to Drew University on Monday afternoon.
The two teams traded goals and were tied at 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Jack Crowley scored for the Rangers while senior
Nolan Gottshall powered home his sixth goal of the season for the Cyclones.
Drew scored the first three goals of the second quarter and took a 4-1 lead with 12:37 to go in the half. All three of those tallies were man-up goals as the Cyclones took a three-minute non releasable penalty to start the period.
Centenary scored two of the next three goals and cut Drew's lead to two, 5-3 with 2:48 to go in the stanza. Mott scored both of those goals for the Cyclones, the first coming off a pass from junior
Chris Snow and the second from Gottshall.
Two more goals before the half allowed the visitors to take a 7-3 lead at the break. Crowley and
Kyle MacDonnell each scored their second goal of the game for Drew during that stretch.
The two late goals were part of a 6-0 run that bridged the second and third quarters and gave the Rangers an 11-3 lead with 8:40 left in the third.
Sophomore
Chris Howell broke up the Drew run with his first career goal at 6:30 of the third quarter. Howell's goal came off a pass from Snow, his second assist of the game.
Drew scored three of the final four goals in the game and claimed the 14-5 victory. MacDonnell completed his hat trick for the Rangers while Mott notched his third of the game in a man-down situation for the Cyclones.
Drew out shot the Cyclones 31-26 and held a slim 22-21 edge in ground balls. The Cyclones won 12-of-21 face offs in the game.
Nate Sanders made 10 saves to earn the win in goal for the Rangers. Freshman
Wayne Safreed made eight saves in the loss before giving way to sophomore
Noah Jones, who recorded two stops.
Kevin Goettlich had three goals, three assists and three ground balls to lead Drew.
Mott led Centenary with three goals and three ground balls while Gottshall had a goal and an assist.
The Cyclones are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 7 with a 7 p.m. game at Stockton. Fans are encouraged to check back with CentenaryCyclones.com as that schedule may change with more winter weather predicted to hit the area on Wednesday.
