HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Wayne Safreed made a career-high 16 saves as the Centenary University men's lacrosse team fell to DeSales University by an 11-2 score on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams traded goals early and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 12:23 to go in the first quarter. The Cyclones' goal came off the stick of sophomore
Chris Howell and was assisted by senior
Spencer Stachowiak.
Zach Bowen scored for DeSales at 5:59 of the first quarter and that kicked off a 9-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 10-1 advantage in third quarter. Bowen found the back of the net three times during that run while
Tommy Friedman struck for a pair of goals.
The Cyclones broke up the run with a goal from freshman
Kyle Mott at the 10:06 mark of the fourth quarter. It was Mott's 12th score of his rookie campaign.
DeSales got one more goal from
Rob Heaney at 6:43 of the fourth quarter and claimed the 11-2 victory.
Matt Barry made 10 saves in goal for DeSales before giving way to
Vincent Groelly who had six saves in the final 15 minutes of the game. For Safreed it was the fifth time this season he has recorded double digit saves.
DeSales out shot the Cyclones 33-26 in the game but Centenary won 10 of the game's 16 faceoffs.
Bowen led DeSales with three goals and two assists for five points on the afternoon.
Matt Motto added a goal and a game-high three assists for four points.
In addition to his goal, Howell finished with 10 faceoff wins and seven ground balls for the Cyclones.
Centenary is back in action as it hosts Keystone on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m.
