HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –Sophomore
Juli Wright went 6-for-7 at the plate to lead a powerful offensive attack from the Centenary University softball team in a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame of Maryland in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action Friday.
Centenary won game one by an 18-1 mark, it was the most runs scored by the Cyclones since they plated 21 runs against Cairn in the 2016 season. The Cyclones then completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Game One Recap (Centenary wins 18-1)
After the Cyclones set the Gators down in the top of the first, the offense wasted little time in getting to work in the bottom half of that frame. Centenary sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first. Senior
Sammie Darling had a two run single while fellow senior
Raychel Piserchia plated a pair of runs with a triple to right field. Senior
Carolyn Clites capped the big inning with an RBI double to left field.
The Cyclones plated two more runs in the bottom of the second and took an 11-0 lead. Sophomore
Justine Stefura had an RBI single in that inning.
Freshman
Tessa Ferentinos' RBI single in the third inning extended the Centenary advantage to 13-0.
Centenary put five runs on the board in the bottom fourth and led 18-0 in the game. The Cyclones got RBI singles from senior
Ashley Eisenstein, freshman
Courtney Deloughery, sophomore
Jessica Hewitt and sophomore
Imani Lugo in that frame.
Notre Dame got one run back in the top of the fifth as
Lucy Polvinale had an RBI groundout. That would be it for the Gators as Centenary claimed the 18-1 win.
Darling earned the win in the circle after going three innings and giving up just one hit while striking out six. Freshman
Samantha Gabriele gave up just one run in two innings of relief work.
Maddie King took the loss for Notre Dame after giving up 18 runs on 21 hits in four innings.
Every player in the Centenary line-up finished with at least one hit on the day. Clites and Wright both went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Deloughery and Eisenstein both had two hits and three runs scored for the Cyclones.
Samantha Kastner finished with two hits for Notre Dame.
Game Two Recap (Centenary wins 9-1)
The Cyclones again wasted little time getting the offense going as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Darling and Wright both had RBI singles and Deloughery added an RBI groundout. Wright came around and scored on a passed ball in the frame as well.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the third with a pair of runs and held a 6-0 advantage in the game.
Clites and Deloughery contributed RBI singles in the fourth inning, which gave Centenary an 8-0 lead in the game.
Notre Dame broke through for a run in the top of the fifth as
Isa Carunuga had an RBI single.
The Cyclones closed out the game with an RBI single from Eisenstein in the bottom of the fifth.
Hewitt earned the win the circle for the Cyclones as she gave up one run in 4.1 innings of work. Darling got the final two outs of the game.
Hanna Morseman took the loss for Notre Dame after giving up nine runs on 14 hits.
Eisenstein and Wright were both a perfect 3-for-3 in game two. Eisenstein had two runs scored and RBI while Wright crossed the plate three times and also drove in a run. Deloughery had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones as well.
Kastner had two hits for the Gators.
Centenary wraps up a busy week when it hosts Cabrini in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at noon.
