Big Fifth Inning Gives Centenary a Split of Keystone Doubleheader

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A eight run fifth inning lifted the Centenary University softball team to a come-from-behind 10-5 win and a split of the Cyclones' Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader against Keystone College. The Giants battled back and took game two of the doubleheader, 8-0.

Game one (Centenary Win)
Keystone struck first with three runs in the top of the first in game one. That inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Gabrielle Truesdale.

The Cyclones got one back in the third as senior Ashley Eisenstein singled to right field and sophomore ­Justine Stefura scored.

The Giants pushed their advantage to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

Centenary sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the fifth inning and plated eight runs to take a 9-5 advantage. Highlighting the inning were two run singles from sophomore Juli Wright and Eisenstein. Senior Carolyn Clites also provided a pair of RBI singles in the frame.

The Cyclones added to their lead in the sixth inning as freshman Tessa Ferentinos' single to left field scored senior Raychel Piserchia.

Senior Sammie Darling picked up the win with her complete game effort. Darling surrendered five runs on nine hits with a strikeout. Alyssa Hughes took the loss after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Centenary finished with a season-high 14 hits in the contest. Eisenstein was one of five Cyclones to record five hits in the game. She added three RBIs and a run scored while Stefura contributed two hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Clites had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones.

Paige Mokychic led Keystone with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the game.

Game two (Keystone win)
Keystone scored three runs in the second inning to take an early lead in game two. Samntha Monetti had a two-run double and later scored on a passed ball.

The Giants extended their advantage to 7-0 with two runs in the third and two more runs in the fourth. Monetti had an RBI ground out in the third while Shannon Lloyd hit a two-run home run in the fourth.

Keystone capped the scoring with an RBI single from Kaylee Hartman in the fifth inning, which made it an 8-0 game.

Abby Aniska earned the win in the circle as she surrendered just one hit in five innings of work. Sophomore Jessica Hewitt took the loss for Centenary after giving up five runs on five hits in two innings of work.

Lloyd led Keystone in game two as she was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Monetti had two hits and three RBIs.

Eisenstein reached base twice for the Cyclones with a hit and a walk.

The Cyclones will be back in action as they host Notre Dame of Maryland on Friday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
