Cartaino Sets School Record for Games Played in Loss to Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Rachel Edwards scored 19 of her team-high 21 points in the second half but it was not enough as the Centenary University women's basketball team fell at Gwynedd Mercy, 78-48 on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

With her appearance at the start of the game, senior Nicole Cartaino set the school record for career games played. Cartaino's 104th career appearance broke Jen Vasta's record of 103 career games played.

Gwynedd Mercy scored the first seven points of the game and took a 16-5 lead on a lay-up form Olivia Roseman at 3:15. The Griffins took a 19-9 lead at the end of the first period.

Gwynedd Mercy struck first in the second quarter with a three-pointer but Centenary scored the next four points of the stanza and cut its deficit to nine, 22-13 with 7:09 left in the period. Cartaino completed a traditional three-point play for the Cyclones during that stretch.

The two teams traded points as a pair of free throws from senior Amber Reisenwitz made it a 27-17 game with 3:36 to go until the half. A lay-up from Roseman with 21 seconds on the clock sent Gwynedd Mercy into the half with a 33-21 advantage.

A lay-up from Cartaino made it a 35-23 game with 8:20 to go in the third quarter. Gwynedd Mercy hit three three-pointers over the next three plus minutes and that helped the home team open up a 46-23 lead with 4:42 to in the period. The Cyclones and Griffins traded points over the final four minutes of the quarter as Gwynedd Mercy took a 52-36 lead with 10 minutes to play.

The fourth quarter proved to be Edwards time to shine as she had 10 points and six rebounds during that 10-minute stretch. The two teams battled throughout the period but the Griffins were able to maintain their double-digit advantage and claimed the 78-48 victory.

Gwynedd Mercy shot 34.9 percent from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers in the game. The Griffins were 25-for-31 from the foul line. Centenary posted a 22.4 field goal percentage and was 21-for-33 from the charity stripe. Gwynedd Mercy held a 51-41 advantage in the rebounding battle.

Edwards led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The senior now has 311 points this season and 999 for her career. It was also Edwards' seventh double-double of the season. Reisenwitz contributed nine points and nine rebounds while Cartaino had eight points.

Bianca Adams led Gwynedd Mercy with 16 points.

The Cyclones will be back in action when the CSAC playoffs get underway on Monday, Feb. 19. The Cyclones will travel to Marywood for a 7 p.m. game.
