LA PLUME, Pa. – A 32-20 halftime lead lifted the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 51-41 at Keystone College on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Senior
Rachel Edwards led the Cyclones with 18 points.
Keystone took an early 7-4 lead as
Nina Hodanich connected on a three-pointer at 6:39 of the first quarter. An 8-0 run gave the Cyclones a 12-7 lead with 3:06 remaining in the period. Edwards was responsible for half of the Centenary points during that stretch.
After Keystone halted the Cyclones' run, Centenary scored four of the final six points and took a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Centenary scored the first five points of the second quarter and took a 21-12 lead with 8:22 showing on the clock. Freshman
Danika Brandt connected on a triple during that scoring spurt. The Giants got back-to-back buckets and pulled to within five, 21-16 with 6:57 to go before the half.
The Cyclones closed out the second quarter on an 11-4 run and took a 32-20 lead at the half.
The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle as the two teams combined for just 15 points. Centenary took a 39-28 lead after three periods of play.
Keystone scored five of the first nine points in the fourth quarter and cut the Centenary lead to 10, 43-33 with 5:12 to play. Hodanich scored all five of the Giant's points during that stretch.
The Cyclones scored four of the next six points and took a 47-35 lead with 3:49 left on the clock. Edwards and senior
Nicole Cartaino each tallied two points during that stretch. A jumper from freshman
Julie Pankowski gave the visitors a 49-37 advantage with 2:23 to go in the game.
The two teams traded points over the final two minutes as Centenary earned the 51-41 victory.
Centenary shot 38.2 percent from the field and was 6-for-12 from the foul line. Keystone posted a 28.9 field goal percentage and was 13-for-18 from the charity stripe. Keystone held a 38-34 advantage in the rebounding battle.
Edwards finished with a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds and five steals. Edwards now has 290 points this season and 978 for her career. She needs 22 more points to become the ninth player in school history with 1,000 career points.
Senior
Amber Reisenwitz added 11 points, five assists and four steals for the Cyclones. Cartaino finished with six points and five rebounds in the game. With her appearance in the game, Cartaino tied
Jen Vasta's school record for career games played (103).
Maddy Moro contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds for Keystone.
The Cyclones wrap up the regular season as they visit Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
