HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The top seeded Centenary University women's soccer team captured the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 2 Cedar Crest on Saturday afternoon.
The Cyclones, who were making their fifth appearance in the conference's championship game, captured their second CSAC title and first since 2010.
Senior forward
Amanda Benoit was named the Tournament MVP after a strong performance. She picked up the assist on the game's first goal and broke the CSAC record for career assists in the process with her 45th career helper.
The two teams went back-and-forth early in the contest as both teams seemed to be feeling each other out.
The Cyclones broke through with a goal at the 10:48 mark as Benoit made a long run up the sideline near the team benches and delivered a nice pass to the middle that junior
Haley Hobbs was able to knock home for her seventh goal of the year.
The two teams continued to battle over the remainder of the first half but both goalkeepers and defenses stood strong and Centenary took the 1-0 lead into the half.
The second half proved to be another defensive battle as both sides stood strong. Freshman
Rachel Colt made a beautiful fingertip save at one point while the defense around her did a nice job of limiting the Cedar Crest opportunities.
Cedar Crest keeper
Morgan Maddock kept the Cyclones off the board until the final second of play as Hobbs fed a ball into the center of the box that junior
Chloe Christopher was able to push home to make it a 2-0 advantage.
As the final tenths of a second ticked off, the Cyclones celebrated a 2-0 victory and the title.
Colt made eight saves to secure her eighth win of the season and the team's 12th shutout of the year. The 12 shutouts break the school record for single-season shutouts, previously set by the 2011 team.
Maddock finished with six saves for Cedar Crest.
The Cyclones earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the win. Centenary will find out its tournament fate on Monday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
