Big Second Quarter Lifts King's Over Women's Basketball

WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Freshman Carly Tarnowski tied her season-high with six points for the Centenary University women's basketball team at King's College (Pa.) on Monday night.

A big second quarter from the Monarchs broke open a close game and gave the home team a 66-31 victory.

Centenary opened the first quarter on a 6-3 run as sophomore Danika Brandt hit a jumper at 2:43. Mackenzie Yori scored the final five points of the period as King's took an 8-6 lead after 10 minutes of play.

King's opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and pushed its lead to 30-14 at the half. Tarnowski scored all six of her points in the period for the Cyclones.

The third quarter started with a 7-0 run for the home team as King's took a 43-22 lead with 10 minutes to play. Junior Katie Alvarez led the Cyclones with six points in that period.

The two teams continued to battle in the fourth period as King's secured the 66-31 victory.

King's shot 42.9 percent from the field in the contest and was 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Centenary posted a 35.1 field goal percentage in the game and was 5-for-12 from the foul line. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle, 35-23.

Alvarez led the Cyclones with 10 points and eight rebounds while Tarnowski had six rebounds. Junior Dayna Wich had five rebounds while Brandt finished with four points and four rebounds.

Yori led King's with 19 points and seven steals.

The Cyclones will be back in action when they host Drew on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. That game was originally scheduled to be played at Drew but had to be moved to Centenary due to facility issues.
