Alvarez Paces Women's Basketball in Season Opener at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Junior Katie Alvarez had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team in its season opener at Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights jumped out to a 12-3 lead after one period of play and ended up claiming the 68-45 victory.

Taylor Dunn and Camille Menns each had four points as Arcadia grabbed an early lead after 10 minutes of play.

Sophomore Danika Brandt drained a three-pointer in the second quarter to lead the Centenary efforts but Arcadia took a 33-13 lead at the half.

The Cyclones had their best offensive period in the third as they exploded for 20 points in that 10-minute stretch. Centenary scored six of the first nine points in the stanza as freshmen Jessica McKenzie and Victoria Jacobs along with sophomore Julie Pankowski each had a bucket. Alvarez scored nine of her 14 points in the period. Arcadia led 53-33 after three periods of play.

Freshman Taylor Bossert drained a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter but the Knights responded with an 8-0 run and pushed their lead to 63-36 with 7:14 to play. The Cyclones scored nine of the final 14 points. Jacobs and Alvarez each scored three points during that stretch. Arcadia claimed the 68-45 victory.

The Knights shot 34.4 percent from the field and made 23-of-28 chances from the foul line. Centenary shot 30.4 percent from the field and was 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones held a 43-42 edge in the rebounding battle.

In addition to Alvarez's double-double performance, the Cyclones got nine points and five rebounds from Jacobs. McKenzie contributed nine rebounds, six points and a blocked shot.

Dunn led Arcadia with 24 points while Menns had five points and 10 rebounds.

The Cyclones will be back in action when they make their home debut on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they host Ramapo at 7 p.m.
