HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Seniors
Rachel Edwards and
Nicole Cartaino recorded double-double performances to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team in a 78-63 loss to Marywood University on Thursday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
The Cyclones jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead on a jumper from Edwards at 7:32 of the first quarter. The two teams traded three-pointers, as Edwards' first of four triples on the night, gave the home team a 13-11 edge at the 5:31 mark. Marywood scored nine of the final 14 points in the stanza and took a 20-19 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
Marywood opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run and took a 30-19 lead with 8:02 to go before the half.
Aryah Aungst tallied half of the Pacers' points during that stretch. Centenary responded with a 5-2 run of its own and cut the visitors' lead to six, 32-26 with 4:19 left in the period. Edwards knocked down another triple during that run. The two teams continued to battle as a late jumper sent Marywood into the half with a 36-27 advantage.
Centenary scored 10 of the first 21 points in the third quarter as the Cyclones found themselves trailing by 10, 47-37 with 4:22 showing on the clock. Senior
Julia Presant scored six points for the Cyclones during that scoring run. The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court as a late three-pointer by
Erika Bistran gave Marywood a 61-44 advantage with 10 minutes to play. Â
The two teams battled throughout the fourth quarter as the Pacers were able to maintain their double digit lead and claimed the 78-63 victory.
Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field in the contest. Marywood shot 44.9 percent and was aided by 12 made three-pointers. Centenary posted a 45.8 field goal percent and made four three-pointers.
Centenary won the rebounding battle, 42-37. The Cyclones have now outrebounded six of their last nine opponents.
Edwards led Centenary with 21 points and 11 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season and marked the third time this year she has scored at least 20 points in a game. Cartaino contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Presant was the third Cyclone in double figures as she finished with 12.
Aungst came off the bench to lead Marywood with 19 points.
Centenary is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20Â as it travels to Rosemont for a 1 p.m. game.
