HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2017) - Reigning CSAC Player of the Year
Emily Pizzuto (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) converted on an overtime penalty kick in the 91
st minute to give the Centenary University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Drew University on the final day of the Cyclone Kickoff Classic.
Pizzuto notched her second goal in two days for the Cyclones who improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2011. Centenary opened that season with a 4-1 defeat of Drew and a 1-0 victory over Rowan. Alex Gilgorri scored the game tying goal for the Rangers who fall to 1-1 overall.
The contest was fairly even throughout the first 15 minutes with the Cyclones and the Rangers getting off seven shots. Centenary finally broke the scoreless tie in the 22
nd minute when junior
Amanda Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) moved into first place on Centenary's all-time assist list. The Hazlet native notched her career 26
th assist with a cross to freshman
Brooke Carty (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) for the 1-0 lead. The rest of the opening stanza was fairly quiet as the Clones held the advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Drew evened the match early with a score just three minutes into the latter 45. Brielle Castanheria, who was inserted at goalie during halftime, proved to be a huge factor in keeping the game close as she stopped five of the Cyclones eight shots including late attempts from senior
Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) and junior
Kristin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor).
The game would be decided in the extra session, when the Cyclones earned a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Pizzuto was selected to take the kick and calmly nailed the shot into the right side of net.
J.Benoit led the Cyclones with four shots, while Pizzuto, A. Benoit and junior
Kara LaPolice (East Amwell, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) each tallied three shots apiece. Senior
Kaitlin Marold (Edison, N.J. / Edison) made three saves in 90:45 of work in the net.
