Women’s Soccer Explodes for Six Goals in CSAC Opener

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2017) – The Centenary University women's soccer team scored three goals in each half to open Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 victory over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon.

Juniors Amanda Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) and Kristin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor), along with sophomore Chloe Christopher (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central), each tallied a goal and an assist for the Cyclones who improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the CSAC. Jamie King scored the lone goal for the Knights who fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC.

The Cyclones wasted little time notching their first goal of the afternoon in the 2nd minute. Senior Emily Pizzuto (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) played the ball over the top to Karszen, who then tapped it to Christopher and she beat the defender down the right side for the score. The Clones pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the 25th minute when sophomore Victoria Speakman (Sicklerville, N.J. / Timber Creek) notched her first career goal with a 40 yard strike that caught the Knights netminder off guard and landed in the back corner of the net.

The Cyclones stretched their lead to 4-0 with scores by junior Kara LaPolice (East Amwell, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) and Benoit. Neumann finally got rid of the goose egg on the scoreboard when King scored on a free kick situation in the 71st minute. Centenary maintained a 4-1 advantage entering the final 10 minutes of play.

The Clones continued to pour it on as Centenary took a 5-1 lead off an extremely impressive goal in the 84th minute. LaPolice played a corner kick into the box, which was headed by senior Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) and then redirected to the forehead of Karszen. Karszen's header hit with such force that it got lodged in between the net and the back post of the goal.

CU's final goal of the afternoon saw two firsts, as sophomore Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) scored the first goal of her career and fellow classmate Haley Hobbs (Fairfield, Pa. / Gettysburg Area) notched the first assist for her career.

Karszen took a game-high five shots, while redshirt sophomore Sam Bombardiere (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) tallied four shots. Senior Kaitlin Marold (Edison, N.J. / Edison) improved to 3-1 in the net with three saves in 75:46. Fellow classmate Taylor Pryslak (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) saw her first action of the season, playing the final 14:14 of the contest. King, Grace Stauffer, Shannon Martina, Tina Tarantino and Micaela Miller all took two shots for Neumann. Brittany Cullison and Kristen Montgomery combined for seven saves as Montgomery took the loss.

Head Coach Kevin Davies and the Cyclones will return to action in Rosemont, Pa. on Wednesday, Sept. 20th against the Ravens of Rosemont College at 7:00 p.m.
