Suzuki Scores Impressive Goal as Men’s Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2017)- Freshman Daisuke Suzuki (Yokohama, Japan / Toin Gakuen) netted an impressive goal as the Centenary University men's soccer team dropped the season opener to the University of Scranton, 3-1 on Friday evening.

Michael Donnelly, Kyle Robbins and Tim McGovern each netted a goal for the Royals who improve to 1-0 overall. Senior Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) tallied three shots for the Cyclones who fall to 0-1 overall.

Scranton pressed Centenary's defense early, recording six shots in the opening 27 minutes. Despite the heavy press, the Cyclones lit up the scoreboard on the first career goal from Suzuki. The freshman midfielder ripped a shot from 45 yards out that curled into the far upper right corner of the net.  Scranton took another six shots before halftime and Centenary held on to a 1-0 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Scranton finally broke through with three goals, including a score just over five minutes in and a penalty kick from Robbins in the 73rd minute. The Royals added an insurance goal late with a header off a free kick. Junior Devon Warne (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) made five saves and took the loss, while Blake Hammert made five saves and improved to 1-0 overall. Senior Daniel Lamanna (Roxbury, N.J. / Roxbury) and junior Chris Cameron (Waldwick, N.J. / Waldwick) each tallied a shot for the Cyclones. Riley Smith led the Royals with five shots.

Head Coach Keith O'Connor and the Cyclones will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 2nd, in Wilkes Barre, Pa. against the Monarchs of King's College at 3:00 p.m.
