HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Mar. 3, 2017) – Freshman
Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) went 6-for-8 with four runs scored and three RBI's as the Centenary University softball team posted two shutout victories in the doubleheader sweep of Rosemont College on Monday afternoon. The Cyclones improve to 6-12 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, while the Ravens fall to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in the CSAC.
GAME 1: Centenary 12, Rosemont 0 (5 Inn.)
Stefura went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, while junior
Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township) and freshman
Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional) recorded two hits with two RBI's as the Cyclones collected 12 runs on 12 hits in the mercy rule shutout victory.
Centenary didn't waste any time posting runs on the scoreboard as they recorded eight of their 12 runs in the first two innings. Already leading 2-0 entering the bottom of the second, the Cyclones tallied six runs on five hits, including RBI's from Stefura, Eisenstein, junior
Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury), and Hewitt. Centenary held an 8-0 advantage.
The Clones added on to their lead with four runs on three hits in fourth, which was highlighted by another RBI from Hewitt and a two RBI single from Stefura to score Hewitt and senior
Alexis Wilson (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist).
Darling had a strong outing in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout victory with a season-high nine strikeouts and no earned runs. Charli Fillmore struck out two batters in the loss for the Ravens.
GAME 2: Centenary 7, Rosemont 0
Stefura and Eisenstein both recorded three hits with two runs scored, while junior
Raychel Piserchia (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Queen of Peace) and
Juli Wright (Colonia, N.J. / Colonia) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Cyclones recorded seven runs on 13 hits in the nightcap shutout victory.
Centenary jumped on the Ravens early with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. After three straight singles from Darling, Wright, and Piserchia gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead, Hewitt added two more runs in the inning with a single to center field that cleared the bases.
Junior
Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) helped Centenary extend their lead to 6-0 in the fourth with a two RBI single that scored Eisenstein and Stefura.
Hewitt also had a strong outing in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout victory with four strikeouts and no earned runs.
