HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Apr. 22, 2017)- Junior
Raychel Piserchia (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Queen of Peace) went a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBI's, four runs scored, three triples and one double as the Centenary University softball team split a doubleheader with Gwynedd-Mercy on Senior Day.
The Cyclones record now stands at 13-17 overall and 11-7 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, while the Griffins record now stands at 14-16 overall and 10-8 in the CSAC.
GAME 1: Centenary 14, Gwynedd-Mercy 8
Freshman
Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, while junior
Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Senior
Jamie Weingarten (Kendall Park, N.J. / South Brunswick) and junior
Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) both drove in three RBI's as the Cyclones tallied 17 hits in the comeback victory.
Centenary actually led 4-0 entering the third, when the Griffins rallied with seven runs on six hits to take their first lead of the contest at 7-4. The Cyclones responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning, including three RBI's from Weingarten, two RBI's from Clites and single RBI's from Stefura and Darling. Centenary regained the lead at
12-7 entering the top of the fourth.
Freshman
Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional) would shut down GMercyU in the final four innings with two strikeouts and only one earned run allowed.
Centenary added two insurance runs in the sixth when sophomore
Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township) doubled to score senior
Alexis Wilson (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist), while Clites recorded an RBI sacrifice fly that brought home Stefura.
GAME 2: Gwynedd-Mercy 18, Centenary 10
Piserchia went 3-for-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while freshman
Juli Wright (Colonia, N.J. / Colonia) went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored as the Cyclones were outhit in a high scoring nightcap contest.
Centenary again took an early lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a three RBI double to right center by Wright that scored Eisenstein, Clites and Darling. The Griffins answered back with four runs on seven hits in the second and third innings, which evened the contest at 4-4.
The Cyclones regained the lead one more time at 6-4 in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI's from Piserchia and Weingarten. Gwynedd-Mercy would pull away in the later innings with 14 runs in the final three innings, including five runs on four hits in the sixth. Despite trailing 18-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Cyclones still managed to collect three runs with a two RBI triple from Piserchia and an RBI single from Weingarten.
Before the doubleheader, Coach Broking and her staff honored Weingarten and Wilson for their hard work and dedication over the last few years.
