Baseball Closes Series with Split of Marywood on Senior Day

ALLAMUCHY, N.J. (Apr. 22, 2017)- Junior Tim Maxwell (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) went 4-for-7 with three RBI's and one run scored as the Centenary University baseball team split a doubleheader with Marywood University on Senior Day. The Cyclones record now stands at 4-20 overall and 3-12 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, while the Pacers record now stands at 9-19 overall and 5-10 in the CSAC.

GAME 1: Centenary 3, Marywood 2
Sophomore Joe Piscopo (Matawan, N.J. / Matawan) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior John Tierney (West Milford, N.J. / West Milford) and freshman Jon Fleck (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) each recorded an RBI for the Cyclones who scored three runs on seven hits and held on for the victory.

Centenary took a 2-0 lead over the first two innings as Tierney hit an inside the park homerun to right field in the first and Piscopo hit an RBI single to score fellow classmate Ryan Jasiecki (Ledgewood, N.J. / Roxbury) in the second. The Cyclones pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fourth, when junior Sean Donovan (Howell, N.J. / Howell) led off with a single and then reached third base on back-to-back steals. Donovan eventually scored during the very next at-bat, when a fielding error allowed him to cross the plate.

Marywood answered with two runs in the fifth, when James Goetz hit a two RBI double to left center.

The relief pitching played a key role for the Cyclones as graduate student Joe Frankosky (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) struck out one and only allowed one hit in two innings, while senior Ryan St. John (Washingtonville, N.Y. / Burke Catholic) recorded his first save of the season allowing only one hit and holding Marywood scoreless.

Junior James Graziani (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater – Raritan) recorded his first victory of the season with a strikeout and only two earned runs.

GAME 2: Marywood 9, Centenary 5 (8 Inn.)
Maxwell went 3-for-4 with three RBI's, while both Tierney and Fleck recorded a hit and an RBI as the Cyclones let game two slip away in extra innings.

Marywood scored first in the nightcap, scoring two runs apiece in the first two innings for a 4-0 lead. Centenary answered back with two runs on two hits in the third and three runs on two hits in the fifth for a 5-4 advantage. Maxwell was credited with all three RBI's, including two in the third and one in the fifth. Junior Mike Dolan (Piscataway, N.J. / Immaculata) drove in the game tying run with an unassisted groundout, while sophomore Chase Koffel (Perkiomenville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) recorded the go-ahead run with an error on the Pacers defense.

After the Pacers homered in the sixth to even the game at 5-5, the game remained scoreless until the eighth. In the eighth, the Pacers put pressure on the Cyclones with four runs on only two hits. Centenary ran out of gas, going down 1-2-3 in the final half inning.

After the doubleheader, Coach Kushner and his staff honored seniors Nick Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic), Frankosky, Alan Sciarrillo (Edison, N.J. / St. Joseph), and JP Trotman (Riverton, N.J. / Life Center Academy) for their hardwork and dedication over the last few years.

Head Coach Scott Kushner and the Cyclones will return to action on Friday, Apr. 28th, hosting the Highlanders of Cairn University at 3:00 p.m.
