HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Mar. 29, 2017)- Senior Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled nine points on eight goals and one assist as the Centenary University women's lacrosse team defeated Cedar Crest College in a shootout, 18-16 on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Priscilla Ortiz (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled five points on four goals and one assist for the Cyclones who improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Regina Gill totaled seven points on seven goals for the Falcons who remain winless at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC.

The contest was extremely tight throughout with neither team getting more than a three goal advantage at any point. Voelkner scored five of her eight goals in the opening stanza, including scoring and assisting on a goal as the Cyclones climbed out of an early 3-1 deficit, to take a 4-3 lead on the first career goal by freshman Kassidy Scheuring (Hampton Bays, N.Y. / Hampton Bays).

Centenary attempted to get some breathing room with three unanswered scores that included back-to-back goals from Voelkner and the first goal of the afternoon from sophomore Juliana Arias (Dover, N.J. / Morris Hills) as the Cyclones led 9-6 with 10:45 remaining. The Falcons responded with two goals just before halftime, as Centenary maintained a 9-8 advantage.

Voelkner, Ortiz, and Scheuring all posted hat-tricks in the second half, but two key goals from junior Katie O'Connell (Nutley, N.J. / Nutley) really proved to be the different in the final score. The first came after Cedar Crest scored three of the first four goals of the second stanza, O'Connell put one in the back of the cage that evened the game at 11 and started a run that put the Cyclones back in front at 13-11 with 16:46 remaining.

The second one came after Gill netted her sixth goal of the afternoon; O'Connell shifted the momentum back towards the Cyclones with a goal off an assist from Ortiz with 8:04 remaining. Ortiz would take over in the final eight minutes with three goals that prevented the Falcons from regaining the lead.

Voelkner added 11 draw controls and two groundballs, while Ortiz tallied five groundballs, four caused turnovers and two draw controls.
