Baseball Drops CSAC Opener to Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. (Mar. 25, 2017)- Freshman Jon Fleck (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) went 2-for-6 with five RBI's as the Centenary University baseball team dropped a doubleheader in their Colonial States Athletic Conference opener to Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon. The Mighty Macs improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the CSAC, while the Cyclones fall to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC.

GAME 1: Immaculata 5, Centenary 4
Fleck went 2-for-3 with four RBI's, while senior Nick Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) went 2-for-4 with a run scored as the Cyclones scattered seven hits and four runs over seven innings in the game one loss.

Fleck helped Centenary to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after singling up the middle to score Daniele and junior John Tierney (West Milford, N.J. / West Milford). The Macs did all their damage in the bottom of the second with five runs on five hits; including three RBI's that propelled Immaculata to a 5-2 lead. Fleck's hot bat kept the Cyclones in the game, when he smacked another two RBI single to right field, which brought in juniors Tim Maxwell (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) and Kevin Sensale (Bartonsville, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East).

That would be the closest Centenary would get as they went down 1-2-3 in the final two innings of the contest. Ryan Blough improved to 2-0 with seven strikeouts in the complete game victory. Junior James Graziani (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater – Raritan) struck out two batters in 4.1 innings pitched. Senior Alan Sciarrillo (Edison, N.J. / St. Joseph) made a relief appearance and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball with a strikeout.

GAME 2: Immaculata 6, Centenary 3
Daniele went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sensale went 1-for-4 with two RBI's as the Cyclones scattered six hits and three runs in the game two loss.

The Macs took a 2-0 lead after crossing the plate in both the first and second innings. Centenary cut Immaculata's lead in half at 2-1, after Daniele doubled down the left field line and then was brought home by an RBI single from Sensale.

After the Mighty Macs put another three runs on the scoreboard in the fourth for a 5-1 lead, the Cyclones answered with back-to-back RBI's from Fleck and Sensale in the top of the fifth. Tierney reached on a walk to start the inning and then advanced to third on a double to left center by Daniele. Fleck was up next and grounded out to the pitcher, but Daniele moved to third and Tierney scored. Daniele crossed the plate on the very next batter when Sensale hit an RBI groundout to third. Centenary trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the fifth.

This would be the final run the Cyclones would get as the Macs added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth.

Eddie Decker struck out two batters in a complete game victory. Junior Luis Santiago (Dover, N.J. / Dover) allowed only two earned runs and struck out one batter in 3.0 innings pitched. Senior Ryan St. John (Washingtonville, N.Y. / Burke Catholic), Sciarrillo and graduate student Joe Frankosky (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) all made relief appearances for Centenary.

Head Coach Scott Kushner and the Cyclones will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 29th, hosting the Aggies of Delaware Valley University at 3:30 p.m.
