Raychel Piserchia (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Queen of Peace) and freshman
Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) combined for six hits as the Centenary University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Castleton University, 8-5 and Wisconsin-Superior, 5-0 on their final day at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida. The Spartans improve to 3-0 overall, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-3 overall. The Cyclones close out their stay in Florida with an 2-8 record.
GAME 1: Castleton (VT) 8, Centenary 5
Piserchia went 2-for-3 with two RBI's, while Stefura finished 2-for-4 and junior
Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Cyclones let a very even contest slip through their fingers.
The Cyclones and Spartans each had three runs cross the plate in the first four innings. Piserchia and Clites had a hand in Centenary's first three scores. Piserchia gave the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead in the first, when she doubled to centerfield to score Clites. After two runs from Castleton in the first and second innings, Piserchia and Clites both regained the lead at 3-2 in the fourth when both scored on pitching errors from the Spartans.
After Castleton added another two runs in the fourth, junior
Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township) and Piserchia each recorded an RBI to score Clites and sophomore
Amanda Fox (Unionville, Conn. / Farmington).
Centenary evened the contest at 5-5, entering the bottom half of the fifth. Castleton answered again with three runs on three hits to take an 8-5 lead.
The Cyclones just ran out of gas, as the Spartans never surrendered the lead from that point forward.
Freshman
Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional) only allowed one run and four strikeouts in four innings pitched. Taylor Paquette tossed four innings and struck out three batters to improve to 2-0. Â
GAME 2: WU-Superior (WI) 5, Centenary 0
Stefura went 1-for-3, while Piserchia went 1-for-2 as the Cyclones scattered only two hits over seven innings in the shutout loss to Wisconsin-Superior.
Piserchia and Stefura were the only Cyclones to reach a base, as Piserchia singled to third base in the second and Stefura singled up the middle in the sixth.
Sarah Hendrickson tossed a complete game with four strikeouts as the Yellow Jackets scored runs in the second, third and fifth innings, respectively. Junior
Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) struck out two batters and fell to 2-3 on the season.
