Softball Combines for Six Runs in Pair of Losses

FORT MEYERS, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2017)- The Centenary University softball team combined for six runs on 15 hits in a pair of losses to the College at Brockport, 10-2 and UMass-Dartmouth, 5-4 on Thursday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-5 overall and the Corsairs improve to 8-4 overall, while the Cyclones fall to 2-6 overall.

GAME 1: Brockport 10, Centenary 2 (5 Inn.)
Freshman Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Alexis Wilson (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist), junior Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township) and sophomore Amanda Fox (Unionville, Conn. / Farmington) all tallied a hit as the Cyclones were run ruled in the 10-2 loss to Brockport.

Brockport took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first after Jessica Koneski homered to left field. Centenary answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning, when freshman Juli Wright (Colonia, N.J. / Colonia) hit an RBI ground out to score Stefura. The Cyclones trailed 6-1 in the bottom of the third, when Stefura singled to right center to score Wilson, who tripled to lead off the inning. Brockport then pushed the lead into mercy rule territory after two homeruns in the fourth inning and an RBI ground out in the fifth.

Freshman Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional) recorded a strikeout during the full five innings and took the loss, while Lindsay Wachna struck out three batters and recorded her first decision of the season for Brockport.

GAME 2: UMass-Dartmouth 5, Centenary 4
Eisenstein went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while junior Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) when 2-for-4 with three RBI's, as the Cyclones lost a close contest to UMass-Dartmouth, 5-4. Stefura, Wright, Hewitt, junior Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury), and junior Raychel Piserchia (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Queen of Peace) all tallied a hit in the one run loss.

Centenary scattered 10 hits over seven innings, but did most of their damage in the first two innings. After each team crossed the plate in the first, the Cyclones took a 4-1 lead with three runs on three hits in the top of the second. After Piserchia singled, Stefura walked and Eisenstein singled up the middle, the bases were loaded for Clites. Clites stepped to the plate and smacked a double to clear the bags and record three RBI's in the process.

After Clites three run double, Centenary's bats went quiet for the rest of the game as the Corsairs slowly made their way back into the contest with two runs in the bottom of the second and the game tying run in the bottom of the fifth.

The contest remained deadlocked at 4-4 into the seventh, when an illegal pitch was called, allowing UMass-Dartmouth to cross the plate for the winning run.

Hewitt tossed 4.2 innings and struck out three batters in the loss for Centenary, while Gabby DeLeon tossed five innings of scoreless softball and took the victory for UMD.

Head Coach Kim Broking and the Cyclones will return to action, tomorrow, Friday Mar. 17th in Fort Meyers, Fla. against the Spartans of Castleton University at 9:00 a.m. and the Yellow Jackets of Wisconsin-Superior at 11:00 a.m.
