Freshman Shine as Softball Sweeps Doubleheader

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Mar. 15, 2017)- Freshman Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) and Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional) both went  4-for-9 with a combined eight RBI's as the Centenary University softball team swept a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday with victories over Nichols College, 7-5 and Wilmington College, 10-8. The Cyclones improve to 2-4 overall, while the Bison fall to 5-4 and the Quakers remain winless at 0-8.

GAME 1: Centenary 7, Nichols 5
Junior Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) and Hewitt both went 2-for-4 with two RBI's as the Cyclones came away with their first victory of the season. Centenary trailed 1-0 entering the bottom half of the first, when the Cyclones scored four runs on four hits including RBI's from Clites, junior Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) and fellow classmate Raychel Piserchia (Lyndhurst, N.J. / Queen of Peace). The Cyclones led 4-1 entering the second inning.

Nichols got a run back in the second, before Clites and Stefura drove home RBI's in the fourth to take their largest lead of the game at 6-2. The Bison closed the gap to 6-5 in the fifth with three runs on four hits, including back-to-back RBI's from Kendall Meehan and Zoe Chevrette. Despite Nichols comeback, the Bison were unable to regain the lead as Hewitt drove in her second RBI of the contest with a single down the right field line to score junior Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township).

GAME2: Centenary 10, Wilmington (OH) 9 (8 Inn.)
The offense was on display in game two as the Cyclones and Quakers combined for 19 runs on 28 hits in the 10-9 extra innings decision. Freshman Juli Wright (Colonia, N.J. / Colonia) and Hewitt both recorded three RBI's, as Hewitt went 2-for-5 from the dish, while Wright went 2-for-3 with the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Centenary took a commanding 5-0 lead with five runs on six hits in the first two innings, including RBI's from the freshman trio of Hewit, Stefura and Wright. The Quakers got their bats going in the third and fourth innings as they completely erased the Cyclones five run advantage and evened the game at 5-5 entering the bottom of the fourth.

Centenary once again pushed the lead back up to 8-5 in the four, when Wright, Hewitt and senior Jamie Weingarten (Kendall Park, N.J. / South Brunswick) all recorded RBI's. Wilmington erased the Cyclones second lead of the game with runs in the fifth and seventh to even the game at 8-8 at the end of seven full innings.

In extra innings, the Quakers took a 9-8 lead with a single run in the top of the eighth. This put pressure on the Cyclones in the bottom of the inning. After Clites singled and then reached second on the throw, Eisenstein was thrown out at home. Wright stepped up to the plate next and singled through the left side to score Clites and even the contest at 9-9. After Hewitt singled to advance Wright to second, both advanced on a wild pitch by Kerrie Trautman, who made a late relief appearance for Wilmington.

Darling stepped into the batter's box and struck out swinging but a wild pitch allowed Wright to cross the plate for the victory.

Head Coach Kim Broking and the Cyclones will return to action tomorrow, Thursday, Mar. 16th, in Naples, Fla. against the College of Brockport at 9:00 a.m. and UMass-Dartmouth at 11:00 a.m.
