Softball Falls to Brockport and Salem State in Doubleheader


NAPLES, Fla. (Mar. 13, 2017)- Junior Carolyn Clites (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. / Hasbrouck Heights) went 5-for-8 with four RBI's and one double as the Centenary University softball team dropped morning contests to SUNY Brockport and Salem State on day two of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Golden Eagles improve to 3-2 overall, while the Vikings to improve to 5-2 overall. The Cyclones still remain winless at 0-4.

GAME 1: Brockport 7, Centenary 3
Clites finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's, while freshman Justine Stefura (Port Reading, N.J. / WoodBridge) and junior Ashley Eisenstein (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township) both went 2-for-4 as the Cyclones scattered eight hits and three runs over seven innings in the game one loss.

Brockport scored seven runs on 10 hits in the first two innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Centenary finally got on the board with two runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI's from Clites and freshman Juli Wright (Colonia, N.J. / Colonia).  Clites added her second RBI of the game with a single to right field that scored Eisenstein, who singled to reach base herself.

Junior Sammie Darling (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) only allowed three hits in five scoreless innings pitched.

GAME 2: Salem St. 9, Centenary 5
Clites finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's, while Stefura, Eisenstein, freshman Jessica Hewitt (Waretown, N.J. / Southern Regional), Darling and senior Alexis Wilson (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist) each recorded a hit in the game two loss. After two scoreless innings, both teams combined for nine runs in the third inning alone. The Vikings scored five runs on four hits; including three RBI's to take a 5-0 lead. 

In the bottom half of the fifth, Centenary cut the lead to 5-4 with four runs on three hits. After back-to-back singles from Wilson and Stefura, the Cyclones got their first run on the board when Eisenstein reached on a dropped three strike allowing Wilson to score. Clites came to the dish next and smacked an RBI single to score Stefura, while Eisenstein scored on a passed ball. Wright would score the final run of the inning with an RBI groundout to second base.

SSU broke the game open in the top of the sixth with three runs on three hits, including two errors from the Cyclones defense. Clites recorded her final RBI of the afternoon with a single down the right field line that scored Wilson.

Head Coach Kim Broking and the Cyclones will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 15th in Naples Fla. against Nichols College at 9:00 am and Wilmington College at 11:00 am
