Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Cabrini

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Feb. 20, 2017)- Senior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Centenary University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer to Cabrini University, 48-46, in the first round of the CSAC Tournament.

Myonie Williamson nailed the game-winning jumper as time expired for the Cavaliers who improve to 15-11 overall and will face the top seeded Pacers of Marywood University on Wednesday. Rachel Edwards (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg) finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Cyclones who fall to 20-6 overall.

Cabrini opened the game on a 13-6 run to take their largest lead with 7:27 remaining in the second. The Cyclones responded with a 12-7 run over the final 6:10 to trail 19-18 at the break.

In the second half, Centenary attempted to pull away with a mini 6-0 run that gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the contest at 31-25 with 5:09 remaining in the third. Cabrini recovered and eventually tied the game at 36-36 on a layup by Nomi Washington.

After the Cavaliers pushed their lead back to 43-38 with 5:40 left in the fourth, the Cyclones used an 8-3 run to even the contest at 46-46 on layup by senior Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J. / Belvidere).  Cabrini called a timeout to setup a play on the final possession of the game.

Cabrini ran the clock all the way down to five second remaining. Erin Dodds found a cutting Williamson in the lane for a jumper that bounced off the rim and then fell in as the buzzer sounded to send the Cavs into the CSAC semifinals.

Despite the loss, George is now just five points from moving into first on the all-time scoring list and four rebounds shy of 1000 for her career.

Head Coach Rose Haller and the Cyclones will return to action in the ECAC Tournament on dates and at sites to be determined.
