GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (Feb. 20, 2017)- Four starters scored in double figures as the Centenary University men's basketball team came up short in their upset bid of Gwynedd-Mercy University, 81-77 in the first round of the CSAC Tournament.
Courtney Cubbage finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Griffins who improve to 20-6 overall and will advance to Wednesday's semifinal against Cabrini. Junior
Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) finished with 21 points for the Cyclones who fall to 12-14 overall.
Centenary opened the contest on a 23-9 run which gave them their largest lead of the game with 11:15 remaining. GMercyU responded by closing the half on a 23-10 run, as Centenary held a 33-30 lead at halftime.
The second half proved to be a back and forth affair as both the Cyclones and Griffins traded the lead. Centenary used a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 56-50 with 8:43 remaining. Gwynedd recovered and extended their lead to seven on two separate occasions.
The Cyclones made one last ditch effort to regain the lead with a 6-1 run that cut GMercyU lead to 78-77 with under a minute to play. That would be the closest the Cyclones would get as Spencer missed two game tying three point attempts late in the contest.
