Brix Nets Game-Winner as Men’s Soccer Downs Undefeated Moravian

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2016)- Senior Kevin Brix (Monroe Township, N.J. / Monroe Township) scored the game-winner as the Centenary University men's soccer team netted a goal in each half to defeat previously undefeated Moravian College, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Fellow classmate Chris Bonilla (Newark, N.J. / St. Benedict's Prep) also netted a goal for the Cyclones who improve to 2-2 overall. Saul Marical scored late in the contest for the Greyhounds, who fall to 3-1 overall.

The first half was extremely even, as both teams traded shots on goal. Centenary missed an opportunity in the 8th minute, when junior Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) forced the Moravian keeper out of the box; junior Richy Castro (Landing, N.J. / Roxbury) had a wide open net for the score, but pulled the ball wide right.

Moravian nearly answered with a score of their own, as Connor Phillips ripped a shot that banged off the crossbar. Bonilla would break the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute, as his shot bounced off a Moravian defender into the net.  Centenary held a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the pace of play increased as both teams recorded double digit shots. Centenary increased their lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute, when Brix scored the game-winner off a feed from White.

Moravian responded in the 81st minute with a goal by Marical, off an assist from Phillips. Sophomore Devon Warne (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) had another stellar performance in net, as he made nine saves including stopping two headers in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory for Centenary.

White recorded four shots, while Brix and senior Luis Marin (Union City, N.J. / Union Hill) each took three shots apiece. Phillips took a game-high seven shots, while Marcial tallied five shots in the loss for the Greyhounds.

Head Coach Keith O'Connor and the Cyclones will return to action in St. David's Pa. on Saturday, Sept. 17, against the Eagles of Eastern University at 1:00 p.m.
