Marold Sets Career-High as Women’s Soccer Falls to Western Connecticut

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 13, 2016)- Junior Kaitlin Marold (Edison, N.J. / Edison) made a career-high 18 saves as the Centenary University women's soccer team dropped its third straight contest with a 2-0 loss to Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon.

Allison Oakley netted the game-winner and took seven shots for the Colonials, who improve to 3-2-1 overall. Juniors Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) and Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) both recorded two shots apiece for the Cyclones who fall to 1-4 overall.

The Colonials pushed the tempo from the opening whistle as WCSU took an early 1-0 lead with Oakley's goal in the sixth minute. Centenary was only able to get off four shots in the first half, including Pizzuto and Benoit's attempts right before the half.

Marold prevented the Colonials from increasing their lead as she made nine saves in both halves. WCSU scored an insurance goal in the 65th minute, when Jenna Baron scored on an assist from Autumn Sorice. The Cyclones best chance to score came in the 80th minute, when a booming kick by Pizzuto from 30 yards out was stopped by Colonials netminder Juillan Fernandez.

The Colonials edged the Cyclones in shots (35-7), shots on goal (20-7) and corner kicks (7-2). Senior Korin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor), along with sophomores Kara LaPolice (Hopewell, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) and Kristin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor) each attempted one shot apiece. Andrea DeVoe took a game-high nine shots, while Fernandez made four saves for WCSU.

Head Coach Kevin Davies and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Baltimore, Md. against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University at 1:00 p.m.
