Daniele Homers as Baseball Falls to Cairn in Series Opener

LANGHORNE, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2016)- Junior Nick Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) homered as the Centenary College baseball team fell to Cairn University, 5-4, in the series opener on Friday.

Alejandro Fernandez recorded a walkoff single in the ninth for the Highlanders who improve to 14-10 overall and 2-6 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Freshman Casey Brown (Easton, Pa. / Easton Area) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Cyclones who fall to 12-10 overall and 2-5 in the CSAC.

The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Highlanders scored two runs on two RBI doubles. Cairn would extend their lead to 3-0 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Matthew Buckley.

The Cyclones would respond in the top of the seventh. Daniele started off the inning with a solo homerun, and then was followed by three straight singles from sophomore Kevin Sensale (Bartonsville, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East), freshman Ryan Jasiecki (Ledgewood, N.J. / Roxbury) and Brown to even the game at 3-3.
After senior Chris Ohlweiler (Verona, N.J. / Verona) was hit by a pitch, sophomore Sean Donovan (Howell, N.J. / Howell) singled to left field to score Brown and Centenary took their first lead of the contest.

Cairn scored both the game tying run and the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth. The Highlanders tied the game at 4-4 after an error by Brown allowed Aaron Takacs to score. Cairn then hit a single, had a batter intentionally walked and then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. Fernandez then proceeded to hit a RBI single to win the game and clear the Cairn bench.

Based on the late game heroics, Daniel Morales improves to 3-2, while junior Ryan St. John (Washingtonville, N.Y. / Burke Catholic) falls to 1-2.

Head Coach Scott Kushner and the Cyclones will return to action tomorrow, Sat. Apr. 16, hosting the Highlanders of Cairn University in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
