HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Dec. 7, 2016)- Junior
Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) made a layup with 2.2 seconds remaining in overtime as the Centenary University men's basketball team defeated Rosemont College, 93-91 on Wednesday evening.
Spencer finished with 29 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Cyclones who improve to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Kyle Lafferty made five triples and finished with 28 points for the Ravens who fall to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the CSAC.
Rosemont displayed very hot shooting in the first half, posting field goal and three point percentages above 50%. Lafferty scored 17 points in just 15 minutes, which allowed the Ravens to take a 10 point lead at 36-26 with 3:10 remaining. Spencer struggled shooting the ball to start the game, but heated up in the final three minutes, knocking down three triples in a row to cut Rosemont's lead to 36-35 with 1:46 remaining. Lafferty answered for the Ravens by scoring the final eight points of the half, to give Rosemont a 44-37 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Lafferty and the Ravens went cold, while Spencer and the Cyclones continued to heat up. Senior
Zachary Duymich (Millstone Township, N.J. / Allentown) and sophomore
Jake Logue (Manahawkin, N.J. / Southern Regional) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively after only scoring four points each in the opening stanza. Centenary held an 82-80 lead after Logue split a pair of free throws. On the following possession, the Ravens Khai Roberts forced overtime on a layup with four seconds remaining.
In the extra session, Spencer and Logue did all the scoring for the Cyclones. After falling behind 84-82, Logue nailed a triple off an assist from Duymich to regain the lead at 85-84. Spencer scored the final six points of the game, including the game-winning layup.
Spencer is now only 22 points away from reaching the 1000 point plateau and will hope to do that on Saturday. Logue finished with a career-high 21 points and three blocks, while senior
Paul Jones (Trenton, N.J. / Ewing) added 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Duymich totaled 15 points and seven assists. Jamier Hughes finished with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Itay Levy totaled 11 points and eight rebounds.
