Men’s Soccer Remains Undefeated in CSAC with Victory over Cairn

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2016) – Senior Luis Marin (Union City, N.J. / Union Hill) totaled three points on a goal and assist as the Centenary University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with a 2-1 victory over Cairn on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Richy Castro (Landing, N.J. / Roxbury) scored the game-winner in the 65th minute for the Cyclones who improve to 9-4 overall and 5-0-1 in the CSAC. Tyler Smith netted a goal for the Highlanders who fall to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the CSAC.

Marin scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 9th minute, as junior Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) dribbled the ball towards the six yard box and then fired a pass to Marin at the top of the 18 yard box. Marin turned and ripped a shot in the back right corner of the net.

Smith answered for the Highlanders in the 14th minute, as he played a deflected ball off the hands of sophomore Devon Warne (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) for the score. The game remained deadlocked 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cyclones increased the tempo as they outshot the Highlanders 14-4 in the latter 45. Castro broke the tie in the 65th minute, as Marin's through ball tripped the keeper and gave Castro a wide open net for the score.

Centenary edged Cairn on shots (22-13), shots on goal (9-5) and corner kicks (8-3). Marin and White recorded a game-high five shots apiece, while Castro tallied three and both sophomores Chris Cameron (Waldwick, N.J. / Waldwick) and Jared Miele (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive) took two shots each.  Joey Weaver took a team-high three shots, while Mark Heater made seven saves in net for Cairn.

Head Coach Keith O'Connor and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University at 1:00 p.m.
