Women’s Basketball Goes Wire-to-Wire in Victory over Cairn

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Jan. 5, 2016)- Three players scored in double figures as the Centenary College women's basketball team tallied their first Colonial States Athletic Conference victory in a 73-39 wire-to-wire defeat of Cairn University.

Senior Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J. / Wood-Ridge) totaled 15 points, five rebounds and four steals as the Cyclones improved to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the CSAC. Aigner Bookard led all scorers with 17 points for the Highlanders who fall to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in the CSAC.

Centenary dominated every aspect of the boxscore, including outscoring Cairn 39-5 on bench points. Sophomore Julia Presant (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) and junior Melissa Rabe (Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) proved to be difference makers off the pine as they combined for 22 of the 39 bench points. Presant finished with a season-high 10 points and a career-high five steals, while Rabe just missed out on recording her first double-double of the season with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Cyclones were extremely active on the defensive end, as they tied a season-high with 18 steals. Presant and junior Heather Yaros (Hopatcong, N.J. / Hopatcong) combined for six of the 18 steals in the first half, which allowed Centenary to maintain a comfortable lead for the rest of the game.

The Highlanders had a tough shooting night, as they didn't crack 25% from the field for the entire game. Cairn's leading scorer Amie Eppolito was held to just eight points on 2-for-18 shooting.

Junior Alexis Wilson (Bayonne, N.J. / Marist) finished with eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals in 21 minutes, while fellow classmate Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) missed scoring in double digits, as she finished with eight points and four rebounds.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will return to action tomorrow, Jan. 7th, as they will host the Ravens of Rosemont College at 6:00 p.m.
